BUILDING A GREAT MUSEUM FOR THE SAN FERNANDO VALLEY

Before its acquisition by the Pacific Electric Railway in 1954, the Ashbury Rapid Transit system served much of Los Angeles. Never very large, the system provided a small but useful part of the city of Los Angeles with part of its transportation network.

When Arlene, a newly graduated North Hollyood High School senior took his airplane flight in 1958, she was impressed with the special service that she experienced. There were free beverages, a gratis in-flight meal (see the menu below), and no cost luggage transportation. On request American Airlines provided a deck of playing cards, stationary and writing pens. Children were provided with special toy pilot wings. People smoked cigarettes in waiting lounges and even in the rear of the air plane. And, Arlene didn't have to get to the airport early to be searched.

As you will note, I've been recording the many interesting objects donated to The Museum of the San Fernando Valley from Arlene Bernholtz. Arlene's high school scrapbooks give a wonderful insight into the life and energies of a North Hollywood High School girl.

Each of the objects among Arlene's donation are given an identification number, a description, condition note, whether or not it has been scanned, photographed or used on this blog. The location of the artifact, donor's code, and reference notes will be part of the permanent records of The Museum.

MARTIN POLLARD

Martin Pollard made a good living from his San Fernando Valley car dealerships, among which was his Casa de Cadillac in the 1950s. He also had a strong commitment to the culture and betterment of the Valley. Pollard was the first recipient of the now much coveted Fernando Award in 1959.

This cartoon was published in the now defunct Herald Express newspaper in Los Angeles on the birthday of Los Angeles September 4, 1958. It predicts a high rise building "tomorrow" in the city. 53 years has passed since its publication. What do you think? Did the cartoonist's prediction come true? This coming year the community we now call Northridge will celebrate its 100th anniversary. Richard Hilton, Director of Museum Tour Programs will represent The Museum on the centennial's history committee. Your Museum is dedicated to preservation, protection and exhibition of history in all the communities of the greater San Fernando Valley.

San Fernando Valley College was opened in 1958. In 1972, the institution's name was changed to California State University Northridge.
