When Tony Evans opened the "Talk of the Valley" restaurant on 6842 Van Nuys Boulevard in Van Nuys, he created a stunning cover for his 1965 menu. Few images have been exemplified the culture and history of our Valley than this image.

CORVALLIS HIGH SCHOOL ARCHIVE GROWS

BUILDING A GREAT MUSEUM FOR THE SAN FERNANDO VALLEY

Our Lady of Corvallis closed its doors in 1987 after serving the Valley as a Catholic girls' school for 46 years. In the 27 years since Corvallis dispersed its student body to other schools, chiefly Notre Dame High School in Sherman Oaks, and Providence High School in Burbank, the story of this prominent school has begun to disappear. Your Museum is working with the archivist of the Order of Religious of the Sacred Heart of Mary in Montebello, California to create a history of this important school.

LITTON WAS ONCE A MAJOR ECONOMIC FORCE IN THE SAN FERNANDO VALLEY

Tex Thornton (Charles Bates Thornton) was an officer in the office of statistical control in the US Army Air Corps during World War II. He won a reputation in the service as a genuine expert in “analytical management”, just the kind of guy Henry Ford Jr. was looking for to get the Ford Motor Company back into good financial shape after the war.

After a short stay with Ford, Tex left to work for Hughes Aircraft. In 1953 Tex Thornton acquired a vacuum tube company and the corporate name of Litton.  He and his partners used the company to produce a variety of products (including microwave ovens) and other acquisitions. It was based in the west San Fernando Valley. 

In 1995 many Valley workers lost their jobs at Litton when it was acquired by Northrop Grumman Corporation.

This afternoon, The Museum of the San Fernando Valley received a bound archive of L.A. Pierce College "Roundup" newspapers for 1964 -1965. This great collection was presented to Clay Koerner, the college's outgoing student body president during those years,  Koerner resides now in Bakersfield, California.
The following are images from the Roundup papers.

PHI SIGMA TAU FRATERNITY SAN FERNANDO VALLEY STATE COLLEGE - 1965

        2010  THE YEAR OF VALLEY ADVENTURES

 

Shortly after San Fernando Valley State College was established, so too was a local fraternity called Phi Sigma Tau. This traditional college beer mug belonged to a pledge of the fraternity calling himself "Hammer." 
The fraternity established in 1961 was to become the "Zeta Chapter" of Phi Delta Theta fraternity in 1969. That national fraternity has been on the CSUN campus for 40 years.  
"Hammer" has yet to be identified. The mug was a gift to the Archives of The Museum of the San Fernando Valley from Gary Fredburg -2010 (click on the image to enlarge.)

When Station-Master E.J. Hillings went about his work in 1956, it is doubtful if he knew that in five short years, the Northridge Railroad Station would be demolished. Before this facility served Northridge, it helped to meet the transportation needs of an earlier community called Zelzah.
