Flying Friendly at Van Nuys Airport - 23 Companies Receive Awards

VAN NUYS, CA – June 28, 2017 – Thirty-three general aviation companies received Friendly Flyer Awards at the fifth annual Friendly Flyer Awards Ceremony. Companies were recognized for their compliance with Van Nuys Airport’s (VNY) Fly Friendly Program in 2016. The winners were honored for their outstanding achievement at VNY by adhering to all established noise abatement regulations and achieving 99% or greater compliance with all voluntary noise abatement programs.

“This award is a major accomplishment for operators who comply with some of the most stringent airport noise programs,” said Trevor Daley, Deputy Executive Director of External Affairs for Los Angeles World Airports. The voluntary Fly Friendly/Quiet Departure Program for jet aircraft was established in 1994 to address the community’s concerns regarding jet aircraft noise in neighboring areas. LAWA created the annual "Friendly Flyer" award in 2012 to acknowledge those jet operators who complied with all noise abatement policies and procedures and achieved the highest level of success in adhering to the voluntary No Early Turn and Fly Friendly/Quiet Departure Programs.

The award winners were determined using the following criteria:
• At least 60 southbound jet departures during CY 2016

-Noise Abatement and Curfew Regulation
-Non-Additional Rule
-Noisier Jet Phase Out

MONTAGE OF VALLEY HISTORY ON MENU COVER

BUILDING A GREAT MUSEUM FOR THE SAN FERNANDO VALLEY

When Tony Evans opened the "Talk of the Valley" restaurant on 6842 Van Nuys Boulevard in Van Nuys, he created a stunning cover for his 1965 menu. Few images have been exemplified the culture and history of our Valley than this image.

THE ROBERT MORTON ORGAN COMPANY OF VAN NUYS

 CHERISHING OUR VALLEY             2013

In the 1920s into the 1930s, the Robert Morton Organ Company in Van Nuys was one of the largest organ manufacturers in America. Silent movies were never "silent" and the organ was a major element in the cinema. Some Morton theater pipe organs are still in service today.

NURSES AT VALLEY RECEIVING HOSPITAL c 1961

CHERISHING OUR VALLEY                 2013

Recently Mary Genevieve Rebbe of Granite Falls, Washington, sent me this photo clipping of two nurses at Valley Receiving Hospital in Van Nuys. The photo, taken before Mildred Fecht's retirement in 1962. Mildred, the lady at the right, was my mother. This image is an example of how a picture of a family outing or co-workers, can provide small but useful details about life in the San Fernando Valley. Behind the younger nurse is a dedication plaque with the year of the hospital's founding, and the name of the architectural firm.
Until the opening of Valley Presbyterian Hospital, Valley Receiving Hospital played a vital role in the safety and public health of Van Nuys and the central Valley.

CARMIN OPERA IN 1943 VAN NUYS

CHERISHING OUR VALLEY        2013

In the 1930s, artists, writers, scientists and perceptive members of the Jewish community began to search for ways to leave the growing oppression of a Nazi Germany. This event flyer, given to The Museum of the San Fernanado Valley by Gary Fredburg in 2013, not only announces the opera Carmin by the American Music Theatre in Van Nuys but reveals names of the opera's organizers as well.

LEARNING FROM A BOB'S BIG BOY MATCHBOOK COVER

CHERISHING OUR VALLEY          2013

As cigarette smoking has all disappeared for most San Fernando Valley residents, those free little matchbooks have gone the way of ice age animals. The Museum of the San Fernando Valley collects matchbook covers, not only as colorful reminders of a bygone era, but for the information they can relate. This cover tells the locations of Bob's restaurants in greater Los Angeles; Van Nuys, Burbank Toluca Lake, Glendale, Eagle Rock and Pasadena.

ELECTRIC CARS 100 YEARS AGO IN VAN NUYS

CHERISHING OUR VALLEY                2013

I wonder how many electric cars you'd see the next time you join Richard Hilton in one of his historic walking tours of Van Nuys. I'm not sure if the zillions of car dealerships today on Van Nuys Boulevard even offer vehicles powered by electricity.
If you looked at one of the properties offered by W.P. Whitsett, you would have been escorted to the sites in real electric engine cars.  (click on this image to enlarge it)

Richard Hilton emailed:
"This photo was taken in 1912.  Probably lead by L.L. Whitson, main sales agent hired by Whitsett.  He would be replaced by Charles Bevis in September, 1913, when he had just arrived with his father in law, went to the sales office and found Whitson packing his belongings after being angry at Whitsett.  Charles Bevis asked if he could take the job and Whitson said yes.  Bevis and LeMay became the sales agents and Whitson founded his own real estate office."

ANDY DEVINE'S VAN NUYS HOME IN 1939

CHERISHING OUR VALLEY                2013

The Director of Tours and Adventures for The Museum of the San Fernando Valley is the accomplished actor and fine art photographer Richard Hilton. For some time now, Richard has been searching for information about the home of the western film actor Andy Devine, who lived off of Kester Avenue where Richard is planning a second Van Nuys walking tour.
Associate of The Museum, Art Jacobs sends us a clipping taken from a 1939 "movie magazine" that answers many of Richard Hilton's questions. Art's addition to our area's history demonstrates how little-by-little the story of San Fernando Valley notables is coming together.

THE HOUSE ON SHERMAN WAY 1939

CHERISHING OUR VALLEY          2013

Earlier on this blog, I featured a series of snow-photographs taken in 1950 in Van Nuys.  Here are some more images of the dwelling and possibly a barn or stable taken in 1939. They are a gift to The Museum of the San Fernando Valley from Arlene Bernholtz in May 2013.  (click on images to enlarge them.)

VAN NUYS SNOW PHOTOS FROM 1950

CHERISHING OUR VALLEY         2013

It's interesting to see what sorts of things energize folks, especially where their memories are concerned. Few things seem to annoy people more than the year/s the great San Fernando Valley snow/s occurred. Some photographs in The Museum's archives are marked 1948 and others 1949. There appear to even be conflicting newspaper accounts.
Now to give passionate historians more to get excited about, here are a series of photographs just donated to The Museum of the San Fernando Valley from Arlene Bernholz with yet another date marked on the back of each image "1950".
What do you believe accounts for the differences in these dates?  Were there several great snowstorms?
