When Arlene, a newly graduated North Hollyood High School senior took his airplane flight in 1958, she was impressed with the special service that she experienced. There were free beverages, a gratis in-flight meal (see the menu below), and no cost luggage transportation. On request American Airlines provided a deck of playing cards, stationary and writing pens. Children were provided with special toy pilot wings. People smoked cigarettes in waiting lounges and even in the rear of the air plane. And, Arlene didn't have to get to the airport early to be searched.

DION O'CONNOR'S BICYCLE PATCH

Small things, like this patch from the San Fernando Valley Bicycle Club, often create sweet little reminders of our friends and neighbors. Here's a memento from the life and times of Dion Jeremiah O'Connor who passed away last year at this time.  Dion was an avid bicyclist and an faithful gym goer. Dion, a 1957 graduate of Notre Dame High School in Sherman Oaks, spent his career chiefly at Universal Studios where he did television estimating, studio facility management and worked in television production.

Notre Dame High School was celebrating its 10th year in 1957.  This commencement brochure for June 7, 1957 contains the names of each graduate as well as scholarships earned by students.

The 18 artifacts related to Notre Dame in The Museum's collection, when coupled with a manuscript entitled "The Beginnings of the Brothers of Holy Cross in California" by Brother Richard Daly (1967 Santa Clara University) form an important basis for The Museum's on-going history of this Sherman Oaks high school.

“Steve Bucknam built his home on the corner of Lindley Avenue and Rayen Street in Northridge, California. Steve is standing on the slab of the house that he built himself. He is standing with his oldest son. The picture was taken in the spring of 1951. That is Lindley Avenue in the background. Steve passed away in 2004, the house remains in the family.”

A snapshot of Northridge Elementary in 1957. The school stood on the corner of Nordhoff and Reseda.
Neil Buckman, a Northridge native, shares these photographs as part of the celebration of the 100th Anniversary of Northridge, the Zelzah Colony and Porter Ranch.

STUDIO CITY IMAGE COMES FROM NORTH CAROLINA

We just received this postcard image of Ventura Boulevard facing East in Studio City, "a main thoroughfare extending through this beautiful Valley from Hollywood to points north on U.S. Highway 101. The image was sent to The Museum of the San Fernando Valley from Harvey Tow who resides in Greensboro, North Carolina. It was accompanied by this email message:
"Hi,
I was just perusing your website and having lived in the SF Valley for over 50 years, thought you might like this postcard, if you haven't already gotten one. I think it was taken around 1957, the year that I graduated from North Hollywood High School."
