SAN FERNANDO VALLEY STATE COLLEGE

CHERISHING OUR VALLEY                      2013

Well, guess what! I am one of those people who remembers when CSUN was San Fernando Valley State College, in fact I attended there as a junior transfer. I hated the place. Compared to LA Valley College, that was warm and caring, SFVSC was for me cold and indifferent. Later, after I earned my Masters degree, I took three graduate history classes at CSUN, and they were terrific! Later I would do much of my doctorate research of the literature at the Oviatt Library, easily one of the great and most accessible libraries in Southern California.
Here's a vintage postcard gift to The Museum from Gary Fredburg. Someone told me that the building in this image was destroyed by the great Northridge earthquake?

Caption reads: "One of the beautiful new modern buildings on the campus of San Fernando Valley State College in Northridge, California."

SAN FERNANDO VALLEY STATE COLLEGE 1973

CHERISHING OUR VALLEY IN 2012

When Chris sent this vintage postcard to her friend Pat in Victoria, British Columbia in 1973, she complained of experiencing two days of Victoria rain in the San Fernando Valley on her January visit. Someone should have told her that Canadian geese come to the Valley in January too.

Greetings from The San Fernando Valley - January 1973 - vintage postcard - gift to The Museum of the San Fernando Valley from Gary Fredburg 2012.  (click on image to enlarge it)

1963 STUDENTS AT SAN FERNANDO VALLEY STATE COLLEGE

2010  THE YEAR OF VALLEY ADVENTURES

San Fernando Valley State College was very different from modern California State University Northridge. Foremost, it was affording by teenagers and young adults from middle and working class families. Today, the cost of just text books and supplies for one semester exceed the yearly fees paid by Valley residents in the 1960s.
Here transfer students from LA Pierce College gather on the lawn of the new State College in 1963. The photograph is from an album once kept by the Chi Chi Chi fraternity at Pierce.
If you can identify any of these students at San Fernando Valley State, c. 1963, please refer to photograph number 1921. (click on image to enlarge)

PHI SIGMA TAU FRATERNITY SAN FERNANDO VALLEY STATE COLLEGE - 1965

2010  THE YEAR OF VALLEY ADVENTURES

Shortly after San Fernando Valley State College was established, so too was a local fraternity called Phi Sigma Tau. This traditional college beer mug belonged to a pledge of the fraternity calling himself "Hammer."
The fraternity established in 1961 was to become the "Zeta Chapter" of Phi Delta Theta fraternity in 1969. That national fraternity has been on the CSUN campus for 40 years.
"Hammer" has yet to be identified. The mug was a gift to the Archives of The Museum of the San Fernando Valley from Gary Fredburg -2010 (click on the image to enlarge.)
