A TIME TO BE THANKFUL - HATS OFF TO RANIA PALLAD

2009 The Year of Valley History
Child's Dream of a Home in the San Fernando Valley - Sun Valley Youth Arts Center.

My mom used to say when I felt low for some reason, "Just count your lucky stars!" My first piece of luck was growing up in the San Fernando Valley, surrounded by some of the most creative people in the world. The second is "how very lucky we all all to have the support and hard work of Rania Pallad, The Museum's Treasurer and Chair of our Ways and Means Committee. You will be amazed at all of the adventures that she has in store for 2010.
Rania would like to remind us all that it's the perfect time to make that all-important income tax deduction donation to The Museum.

CHILDREN OF THE SAN FERNANDO VALLEY AND VALLEY HISTORY

2009 - The Year of Valley History

Art by Child - Sun Valley Youth Arts Center - 2009
Photo by Gerald Fecht for the Archives of The Museum of the San Fernando Valley.

A few years ago, a gentleman from Boys Town in Nebraska gave me a little square message-pin that reads:
"When you help a child today, you write the history of tomorrow." I have have long kept the pin over my desk to remind me of one of our Museum's most important missions - the presentation of history and culture to San Fernando Valley children. The reality is that children, who have a sense of belonging to a place, show it greater respect and care. Children need to be recognized as individually important (some are willing to risk their lives and limbs to tag their names in public places). This isn't all that different from powerful people who have their names carved atop grand buildings.

The cool thing about museums, is that they can educate by experience, without the threat of tests or examinations. This makes out educational task more challenging, because we have to win children's interest on the merits of our work.
You are invited to become part of our Museum Community today. By being part of our movement, you can preserve the past, record the present and "write the history of tomorrow."

SUN VALLEY YOUTH ARTS CENTER

2009 - The Year of Valley History

Rock House in Sun Valley - Photo for the Archives of The Museum of the San Fernando Valley by Gerald Fecht July 2009 (click on image to enlarge)
Can you image the sense of adventure the children served by the Sun Valley Youth Arts Center feel as they approach this mysterious old rock house? Built in 1926, the "Rock House" serves today as the headquarters for creative expression for hundreds of San Fernando Valley children. This wonderful center is governed by the Los Angeles City Department of Cultural Affairs under the direction of the brilliant California artist Jesus "Chuy" Rangel. What better investment for our future as the Creative Capital of the World than to excite our children and youth about their creative potential!
