IMAGES OF TARZANA CALIFORNIA

2010  THE YEAR OF VALLEY ADVENTURES
The Museum of the San Fernando Valley has grown to the place where we will be having quarterly public meetings to advance the preservation of Valley history and the celebration of our culture. We are planning to have Museum Community activists in every community in the greater San Fernando Valley. With more volunteers, we expect to discover countless treasures for us all to enjoy and learn from.
I took these photographs of the mosaics above the parking garage of the Whole Foods Market on Ventura Boulevard in Tarzana. Let's hope a volunteer from Tarzana can identify the artist.
Here the mosaic artist depicts the once prominent Tarzana Theater. (click on this image to read the marquee.)
One of the last great citrus orchards in the San Fernando Valley still survives in Tarzana.
From a tree supported Tarzan of the apes to the always running Los Angeles River, from the self promoting Angelyne to historic El Camino Real, Tarzana is a community of significant surprises.
Someday, hopefully soon, your Museum will be rich enough to do a search and buy images such as this. In the meanwhile, we'll keep our fingers crossed that a caring volunteer donor out there will find this citrus label and make it part of The Museum's permanent collection.
Visit the website of The Museum today to join our efforts to preserve San Fernando Valley history. www.the MuseumSFV.org

IMAGES FROM THE TARZAN FOUNTAIN AT WHOLE FOODS IN TARZANA

2010 THE YEAR OF VALLEY ADVENTURES
The new Whole Foods Market in Tarzana has a terrific Tarzan themed fountain facing Ventura Boulevard. Here a chimpanzee swings toward Tarzan and Jane. No doubt his name is Cheetah.

Butterflies float in a jungle of familiar house plants, their beauty enhanced with the ripples of the fountain.

Tarzan, the ape man, swings through a jungle with his mate, the beautiful Jane. (click on image to enlarge)
What a terrific image. I can almost hear this fierce jungle lion roar.

A new fountain has been installed in front of the Whole Foods Market in Tarzana. Using the jungle themes of Edgar Rice Burroughs' adventures of Tarzan, these great mosaics are a true San Fernando Valley treasure.

LOSS OF DANTON BURROUGHS

Llana of Gathol - by Edgar Rice Burroughs - Gift to The Museum of the San Fernando Valley by Jerry Berns - 2008

The sudden death of Danton Burroughs of Tarzana brings before all of us the great importance of historical documentation and preservation of our history. The recent gift to our Museum of a first edition of Llana of Gathol by Edgar Rice Burroughs, illustrated by the great Valley illustrator and photographer John Coleman Burroughs, and inscribed by Danton Burroughs in 1987 presents three generations of the great Burroughs family. The book demonstrates the creative environment of the San Fernando Valley and by being part of the Museum of the San Fernando Valley's collections, will serve to inspire generations of Valley residents and visitors for years to come.

The San Fernando Valley deserves a great Museum of history and culture.
