CORRIGANVILLE

CHERISHING OUR VALLEY                   2013

Located in the Santa Suzanna Pass between Chatsworth and the Simi Valley, Corriganville was once a very popular tourist destination. Built by the film stuntman Ray "Crash" Corrigan, it served as a working film location, chiefly for western movies from 1949 until its sale to Bob Hope in 1965.

Corriganville brochure - Gift to The Museum of the San Fernando Valley from Gary Fredburg 2013.

From the earliest days of the movie studios in the San Fernando Valley, out of town visitors have flocked to movie sets, to see scenes like this of a Dalton Brothers' shootout at Corriganville in the Santa Suzanna Mountains.

Corriganville was used in the making of the film series, Rin Tin Tin. Here actors dressed as Union soldiers raise the American flag over Fort Apache. Interestingly, Southern California played a major role in the actual creation of Fort Apache during the Civil War. If you are interested, read about the exploits of the California Battalion.

 CHERISHING OUR VALLEY                        2013

The Museum just acquired this interesting photograph of a lawn party held in Glendale. The image with a serial number 078, is among many that we receive on a regular basis that needs detective work.

THOEDORE PAYNE NURSERY IN SUNLAND

CHERISHING OUR VALLEY                      2013

The Theodore Payne Foundation's Nursery is an import part of San Fernando Valley culture. The nursery is not a park or recreational area, but rather a no-nonsense working space where educated customers can buy plants native to our region of Southern California. Classes are also held in the facility.

I have to admit, the warnings about rattlesnakes and mountain lion sightings made me just a bit nervous during my visit to the Theodore Payne Nursery.
