A VERY HAPPY HANNUKAH

"A Moment In Time"
by Nancy Mishkin 1998

Recently, my wife spent some time in the Mark Taper Recovery unit of the Jewish Home in Reseda. It was during her stay that I saw a part this remarkable complex. We were very impressed with the good care as well as the many fine pieces of art throughout the facility.
I thought that this photo taken by Theresa Hughes of Nancy Mishkin's tender sculpture might be nice way to wish our Jewish friends in the San Fernando Valley a very happy Hannukah.                        comment by Jerry Fecht

RARE OLD AUTO CLUB MAP TEACHES HOW THE MUSEUM CATALOGUES ITS ACQUISITIONS

BUILDING A GREAT MUSEUM FOR THE SAN FERNANDO VALLEY

Several volunteers from California State University Northridge will be working in the next few weeks on projects for The Museum of the San Fernando Valley. To those who are working on The Museum's archives, I thought it might be useful to demonstrate through this recent donation how our present record keeping is done. This will also show followers of this blog a important addition to our collection as well as our record keeping process.

NEW HINDU TEMPLE IN RESEDA

DISCOVERING OUR VALLEY           2011

I've been doing my morning exercises and watching a PBS series on The Story of India at the same time. I'm actually on my second round viewing the series. There is so much of Mother India that I want to and need to know.
Coincidentally, last week on the way home from a meeting with David Moon of CSUN's VISCOM program, I saw the recently completed Hindu Temple on Roscoe Avenue in Reseda. I stopped and learned that I need to come back in the early morning, or late afternoon.  I shall.  In the meanwhile, here's a gate ornament to invite us to learn more about the Hindu Religion and a little more about India, the place where nearly all western languages were born.

THE YEAR OF THE RABBIT IS ALMOST HERE.

DISCOVERING OUR VALLEY   2011

Soon Chinese New Year will arrive in our Valley. There has been a Chinese presence in the San Fernando Valley since the building of the Southern Pacific Railroad and the planting of America's luxury orchards at the end of the 19th century. Securing the histories of the Valley's Chinese residents is an important mission of your Museum.

Red-faced dragon calls out good fortune to patrons of the Great Wall Restaurant. I love the old fashioned hospitality and good food of the place. And, candied apples for desert, who could ask for more!
Very soon now, the Year of the Rabbit will arrive. Don't forget to say Rabbit! Rabbit! before you say anything else for a full year of GOOD LUCK!  Bridge over a very busy Chinese river at the Great Wall Restaurant in Reseda.

“Maktab Tarighat Oveyssi (MTO) Shahmaghsoudi, School of Islamic Sufism, is an international non-profit organization dating back 1,400 years to the time of the Prophet, Mohammad.
The founder of the School is Hazrat Oveys Gharani, whose way of inward cognition was approved by the Prophet of Islam. The present master of the school is Hazrat Salaheddin Ali Nader Shah Angha.”

Like most Islamic centers in the United State this School of Islamic Sufism is heavily protected. These photographs were taken from an external sidewalk. I will be seeking permission to visit the school soon.

THE MUSEUM OF THE SAN FERNANDO VALLEY HELPS US SEE OUR WORLD DIFFERENTLY

Reseda Street Image - 2008 - Archives of The Museum of the San Fernando Valley - Photo by Gerald Fecht

A modern museum for the Valley must be guided by professionals who understand that the "informal" nature of experiences arise from a genuine shared public interest. The San Fernando Valley deserves a museum that functions as a dynamic platform arising from who we are, where we have been and what we can become.

VISITING THE VALLEY

Judy and Michele came to the Valley today to shop at California Nursery Specialists. They ran out of film as I passed by them. "I'll take your photograph and you will see yourself on the blog."

The smallest plastic pots go for $2 each. This is the place that you need to bring a visitor to, right after you've had lunch at Fuentes on Vanowen in Reseda.
