DISCOVERING OUR VALLEY 2011
Those convicted of serious crimes throughout California after the American Civil War were sent to San Quentin penitentiary in Northern California. In some situations, it could take days to transport a prisoner to the institution. This 1971 clipping from the LA Herald Examiner gives an insight as to what might await a criminal there in 1868.
