In the 1950s, the villages of the edges of San Fernando Valley were poorly

connected by unsure surface streets. Towns like Canoga Park and Sylmar had 

occasional festivals and parades, but young families had little reliable entertainment 

or shopping options. Perhaps a sign of the vast malls to come, Valley Market Town

emerged on Sepulveda Boulevard.

One of the things I love most about the San Fernando Valley is how the public makes use of its parks and recreational spaces. From birthday parties to afternoon walks, the Valley's parks are beehives of activity. The Museum's files on the histories of our parks and constantly revised plans for their use, grow every day. Just this week, for example, The Museum's library has added a dozen yearbooks on Little Leagues in Granada Hills and Northridge. 

A fascinating history of sports and recreation in the San Fernando Valley grows daily in The Museum's archives. From our treasured photographs of the first Valley bicycles (brought from Brighton, England by the Smith family founders of North Hollywood), to Frank Sinatra singing the Stars Spangled Banner opening a baseball game at Birmingham Hospital (now High School), to the arrival of AYSO soccer leagues, sports play a major role in Valley history. Our school football programs not only relate athletic history but genuine works of art.

Sepulveda Pass Tunnel

Do you have any idea of what a half million dollars in 1930 would be worth today? Well, that amount is actually a little less than what the Sepulveda Pass tunnel cost when it was opened in 1930. Most drivers who use the 405 freeway today are unaware that the tunnel, which took 8 years to build, still carries traffic from the west side into the San Fernando Valley. 

Many Valley residents can recall how a rush hour accident in the two lane pass could cause hours and hours delay. 

Today, there is much debate about the possibility of a light-rail system through the Sepulveda Pass. Your memories about Valley transportation and opinions about its future are important to your Museum. Share them with The Museum Community today.             comments by Jerry Fecht
