HISTORIC POSTCARDS ON EXHIBIT AT MID-VALLEY REGIONAL LIBRARY

2009 - The Year of Valley History

Headwaters of the Owens River - 25,000,000 Water Supply Project for Los Angeles, California - Historic postcard gift to The Museum of the San Fernando Valley by Gary Fredburg

Since most picture postcards are sent to other cities, vintage cards from the San Fernando Valley are hard to come by in Los Angeles County. Fortunately, a display rare cards from the San Fernando Valley's past is now on display at the Mid Valley Regional Library in Northridge for the rest of the month of August.

Featured in the exhibit is a collection of early picture postcards, the oldest being one of the San Fernando Mission, printed at the turn of the 20th century. Most of the antique cards show scenes that disappeared long ago, but lucky viewers will recognize landmarks where they once spent time, or merely passed on their way to other places.

The display was organized by Fred Berk, Librarian of the Museum of the San Fernando Valley. He and other Valley activists are working to bring about a major museum of history and culture for the 1,800,000 residents of the greater San Fernando Valley.

The library is located at 16244 Nordhoff Street, Northridge (just west of Woodley Ave. Hours are 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., Monday to Thursday; 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Friday & Saturday; 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday. 1- (818) 895-3650
