Pearl, who grew up in Encino and graduated from Birmingham High School, was the Journal's South East Asia Bureau Chief at the time of his death. He was investigating Richard Reid's attempted destruction of an air plane with a shoe bomb. Daniel Pearl attended Portola Middle School in Tarzana and graduated as a member of Phi Beta Kappa from Stanford University.
