MORE VIEWS OF BEAUTIFUL SAINT ELIZABETH'S CHURCH IN VAN NUYS BY ART JACOBS

DISCOVERING OUR VALLEY   2011

A few weeks ago before The Museum Board's meeting at the Christian Science Church in Van Nuys, Richard Hilton (Director of The Museum's tours - including historic Van Nuys) walk around Saint Elizabeth's Catholic Church on Kittridge Street. Richard remarked about the Latin and Greek inscriptions at the bottoms of the church's bronze lamp posts. I've been to the church dozens of times, and never noticed the lamp post bases before.

This last week Art Jacob's, regular contributor to this blog visited the church and took photographs that I have never seemed to capture. I know we all will enjoy them, along with Art's reasons for his time there.

"Today I had the opportunity to visit St. Elizabeth Church in Van Nuys. The 8th grade class sponsored a rummage sale this weekend to raise funds towards their 8th grade project. Each 8th grader will make a food basket for St Elizabeth's parish families who cannot afford a Thanksgiving meal. After viewing the sale, Mrs Silvie Martin was nice enough to take me on a tour of the school and the Parish. St. Elizabeth has been serving the Van Nuys community since 1928.  

When the school opened under the Sister's of Providence from St. Mary of the Woods, Indiana it housed a two story building with four classrooms. Since then the school has expanded and currently serves students from pre-school to the 8th grade. St Elizabeth's is committed to providing all students with a well rounded education that will assist them in their future. The $400,000.00 sancturay was designed by George Adams; Architect and Roy Steed; Builder. The Catholic Parish with its 120 foot tower was completed in 1949 on the corner of Cedros Avenue and Kittridge Street. Father Patrick O'Dwyer officated at the laying of the cornerstone. I've included some photo's of the Parish, including  a cool bronze water sculture on the wall of the home for the residing Priest.

INSIGHTS ABOUT THE GREAT OLIVER HARDY FROM ART JACOBS

Museum supporter Art Jacobs shares this information about the Oliver Hardy house.

One of America’s most beloved comedians, Oliver Hardy (Laurel and Hardy) and his wife purchased an estate on Magnolia Street in Sherman Oaks just before World War II. They paid a fortune for the place - $20,000.

According to Art Jacobs, the property had a “swimming pool, guest house and stables. The nice thing about the home, is it appears the property has not been remolded and still maintains it's beauty and charm from when it was built. The front door is beautiful! A light oak with original iron hardware.

Hardy also owned the property on the Southwest corner of Magnolia and Hazeltine where he housed a theater dubbed "The Laurel & Hardy Fun Factory."

The car is a 1918 Ford Model T, used in the Laurel and Hardy Films and recently sold for $35,000.00 at the Debbie Reynolds Auction.” Standing in front of the vehicle is Art Jacobs, supporter of The Museum of the San Fernando Valley.

"I attended the 25th Anniversary Southern California Chrysler Performance West Spring Fling Mopar Event. ... It's one of the largest Mopar car shows in the West and they have every year in Van Nuys. If your not familiar with Mopar, it's a group of car enthusiast for the preservation, driving and showing of Chrysler, Dodge and Plymouth cars. This year I took my camera and was able to take a few photos. The Museum is welcome to use them on their site.

Art Jacobs at the Republic Pictures Anniversary

To our delight, Art Jacobs paid a visit to The Museum of the San Fernando Valley's Kids Arts Corner and our San Fernando Valley Memory Bank tables at the 75th Anniversary of Republic Pictures. Art is serious about capturing Valley history, especially through oral interviews. Above, Art Jacobs holds the special program produced for the event, in front of the iconic car that once transported the Valley's famous Nudie around our town.

EXPLORING VALLEY HISTORY ON THE WALLS OF STORES, SHOPS AND CAFES

2010 THE YEAR OF VALLEY HISTORY
One of the things I like most about Art Jacobs' photographs of historic Northridge is the amount of Valley history that shows up on the wall of a muffler shop or a coffee shop. Someday an enterprising student or historian will tell the story of the Valley, just through such walls.

Thanks to Dakin Matthews for showing me Eddie Brandt's wonderful video store on Vineland in North Hollywood. I never have seen so many titles in one place outside of Buckingham Palace.

RUDY'S BARBER SHOP A NORTHRIDGE LANDMARK

This barber shop has been around since the 60's and many of us who grew up around this intersection got haircuts by Rudy.

Rudy is deceased, but the current barber John allowed me to take photos in his shop. It looks the same way it did when the place opened. John even pulled out the Old plastic signage for the center listing all the shops that once was there.
