For those of us who are USC Trojan fans, the 65th Rose Bowl Game played in Pasadena in January of 1979, was a terrific day. The SC boys defeated the Michigan Wolverines, champions of the Big Ten Conference by a score of 17 to 10.
However, for the San Fernando Valley, the 1979 Rose Bowl perhaps even more exciting. Why? The reason was the brilliant USC running back Charles White, who is a graduate of San Fernando High School. In San Fernando, was the hero of the day.
White was, not only a great San Fernando High School football player, but the winner of the low hurdles at the CIF State championship as well.

OTTO'S PINK PIG 1945 - 1979

In 1945, as World War II came to a close, Otto Nassar opened his restaurant, The Pink Pig in what was then Van Nuys - now, Sherman Oaks, California. The place, which originally looked like a cafe off Route 66, was modest in decor and great in food. The fact that celebrities such as Dorothy Lamore and Bob Hope ate there, when returning from long days on the set in the "country", soon made The Pink Pig a destination place in Los Angeles. 

The restauranteur added his name to Otto Nassar's Pink Pig, when he remodeled the place in the late 50's. Located at 4958 Van Nuys Boulevard, a short distance north of Riverside Drive, "The Pig" remained open until 1979.

BUSCH GARDENS WAS A HOLIDAY DESTINATION IN THE NORTH SAN FERNANDO VALLEY

In the mid 1960s, Anheuser-Busch opened its famous Busch Gardens in northern Van Nuys. The gardens were an outgrowth of the Busch family's personal gardens in Pasadena. For many years, after the closing of the gardens in 1979, exotic birds visited homes in the north and west San Fernando Valley.

 Budweiser Pavilion where visitors were allowed to taste sample of beer.

World famous Clydesdale Horses originally from Scotland. Each horse weighed about 2,000 pounds and about 6 feet tall.

 

 Flamingo Island used for the display, care and breeding of beautiful pink birds.

 Monorail feature of Busch Gardens.

 Trained parrots were a major feature of the Busch Gardens' experience.

Tomorrow more pancake mix is used than at any other time of the year. American Episcopalian Christians often hold pancake dinners on Fat Tuesday (Maudi Gras) the day before Shrove-Tide. Catholics and Greek Christians enter a penitential season called Lent this coming Wednesday. Communities with Irish and English heritages serve up big sausage dinners (Banger-Tide) tonight and especially tomorrow.
Traveling monks called Shrivers traveled throughout Europe during Lent accepting the confessions of the guilty.
In Venice a great Carnival is going on as you read this, and massive samba parades in Mobile, Alabama - New Orleans and Rio will rock the world for 72 hours. After tomorrow, meat eating is curtailed - hence "Carne - Vale".
Tonight is masking night. Beads are lucky to give and receive during the Maudi Gras.
