COME VISIT THE MUSEUM OF THE SAN FERNANDO VALLEY AT THE 8th ANNUAL ARCHIVES BAZAAR AT USC

 CHERISHING OUR VALLEY       2013

Archives Bazaar

The 8th-Annual Los Angeles Archives Bazaar

Saturday, October 12, 2013
9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
Doheny Memorial Library
USC University Park Campus

Los Angeles history comes alive at the 8th-annual Los Angeles Archives Bazaar. Organized by L.A. as Subject and presented by the USC Libraries, the annual event celebrates the diversity of Southern California’s history. For scholarly researchers, journalists, history buffs, and those simply interested in exploring the stories of Los Angeles, discovery awaits everyone at the Archives Bazaar. This event is free and open to the public.
The Archives Bazaar draws its strength from the breadth and variety of its participants’ collections. Large institutions will be represented at the bazaar along with smaller organizations and private collections whose materials fill the gaps left in the city’s official history. In all, more than 80 archives are expected to be represented.
A rich suite of programming complements the rare historical materials on display.
The USC Libraries serve as the host institution for L.A. as Subject, an alliance of libraries, museums, and other archival and cultural organizations. The relationship complements the USC libraries’ strong regional history collection and is a natural outgrowth of the libraries’ efforts to preserve and expand access to the primary sources of L.A. history.
USC  is minutes from downtown Los Angeles and is easily accessible by major freeways, and the new Metro Expo line. Doheny Library is located in the center of campus, adjacent to Alumni Park and across from Bovard Auditorium, on Trousdale Avenue. For information regarding parking on campus, visit the Parking Services Website.

Programming Highlights

SPECIAL EVENT/10:00-4:00 p.m.
Archives Roadshow (Intellectual Commons)

Inspired by the Antiques Roadshow, this all-day session encourages attendees to bring in historical materials like documents and photographs, get them assessed by experts from the LAPnet: Los Angeles Preservation Network and then digitized and placed on a USB drive to take home.
SESSION 01/10:00-10:50 a.m.
Public Collections, Private Obsessions (Friends Lecture Hall)

Many great public library collections have started out as the monomaniacal obsession of one person. Three people in the archival field discuss some of the unusual ways in which their collections were formed: Glen Creason, map librarian at the Los Angeles Public Library; Joseph Hawkins, director of the ONE Archives at the USC Libraries; and Wally Shidler, a private collector who has assiduously accumulated a trove of material devoted to Southern California transportation history.
SESSION 02/11:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m.
Pecha Kucha, or a Very Quick Tour of Los Angeles Archvies (Friends Lecture Hall)

Just as speed dating brings together lonely hearts, this quick-paced series of 5-minute presentations will help connect scholars, students, and history buffs with the archival collections they need. More than a dozen L.A. as Subject members will share one notable item from their archives as a way of introducing their collections. Bring a notepad, watch the presentations, and then head down to the exhibition hall for a second date.
SESSION 03/1:00-1:50 p.m.
Beyond the Archives Bazaar (Friends Lecture Hall)

Panelists from different professional sectors will provide advice and tips on how to start your involvement with preserving, showcasing, and sustaining archival collections for years to come. Presenters include John Bwarie, founder of the Los Angeles Heritage Alliance; Snowden Becker, program manager for UCLA’s Moving Image Archive Program; Joy Novak, archivist for the Center for the Study of Political Graphics; and Jennifer Simpson, Manager of Education at the Petersen Automotive Museum.
SESSION 04/2:00-2:50 p.m.
Craft Brewing in L.A.: Tastes and Traditions (Friends Lecture Hall)

Thirsty Angelenos have been drinking locally brewed ales and lagers since the 1850s. Today, a resurgent L.A. brewing industry builds on that legacy, crafting beers—as well as product packaging, marketing campaigns, and drinking establishments—that appeal to local tastes and traditions. Panelists, including Angel City brewmaster Dieter Foerstner, will discuss what makes Southern California’s beer scene unique.
DOCUMENTARY FILM SCREENING/3:00-5:00 p.m.
The Good Giants (Friends Lecture Hall)

Los Angeles native Ivan Houston fought in Italy during World War II with the Buffalo Soldiers of the segregated 92nd Infantry Division. The Good Giants is a documentary, currently in production, which reflects on the irony of American soldiers fighting to free people on the other side of the world when they were still being treated as second-class citizens at home. Director Joe Hartnett will screen part of the film and discuss with Ivan and his family the rich local legacy of the Houston family.
