While Gary Fredburg and I were meeting with Dennis Washburn about ways The Museum of the San Fernando Valley can support the historic Pierce College Farm Center, we got the feeling that we were being spied on. Look! Up in the sky! It's a bird, it's a plane, it's a couple of amazingly agile goats!
Unfortunately for the guy putting up holiday ornaments for the Farm Center's Christmas Tree sales, these goats found the little plastic flags perfectly delicious. Wisely the goats skipped the light bulbs.

This historic Merry-Go-Round may have at one time graced Lincoln Park in Los Angeles. Plans are under consideration to put historic images of the San Fernando Valley, Pierce College and Southern California history in the panels just below the tent-roof.

The Board of Directors and Advisors of The Museum of the San Fernando Valley will meet on December 9th in the Board Room of the Valley Economic Alliance. The entire meeting will focus on The Museum's 2010 calendar and fund-raising concepts/realities.

Since affiliating with The Museum of the San Fernando Valley, Gary Fredburg has served his Museum with great energy and dedication. A graduate of Los Angeles Valley College and Woodbury University, Gary and his wife reside in Burbank, California. He has added hundreds of historic postcards, pamphlets and other paper treasures of Valley history to The Museum's archives. He is now preparing all-Valley meeting of historical societies to plan for a giant garage sale event to raise money and awareness for the many fine organizations working to preserve and share San Fernando Valley history.

Century Plaza Hotel Update
HAPPY BIRTHDAY, MINORU YAMASAKI!
Today would be the ninety-seventh birthday of Minoru Yamasaki (1912 - 1986), the acclaimed architect of the Century Plaza Hotel. The Seattle-born Yamasaki produced distinctive designs in a career that spanned five decades.

In addition to the Century Plaza, he was responsible for buildings including the 1956 Lambert-St. Louis Airport Terminal, the 1962 U.S. Science Pavilion at the Seattle World's Fair, the 1961 Dhahran Air Terminal in Saudi Arabia, Century Plaza's Twin Towers (1975), and most notably, New York's late World Trade Center Twin Towers, completed in 1973.
Yamasaki created a complex body of work that is just now beginning to be fully understood and appreciated.

Today we celebrate one of America's great architects and his contributions to the field. Yamasaki's Century Plaza is one of Los Angeles' most beloved and iconic hotels, and we thank him for it.

As holiday trees begin to arrive at the Pierce College Farm Center, it's a good time for The Museum of the San Fernando Valley to express its thanks and admiration to Dennis Washburn and his terrific Foundation staff for all that they have done for the Valley this year. With all of the difficulties in this unstable economy, keeping a foundation growing isn't any easy task. But thanks to the many folks who support the foundation, the "Grand Old Farm" still remains one of the great treasures of our city.
