Sculptor and artist Charles Sherman at The Museum SFV - 8/13/22 - Noon - 2:00 pm Free admission - please RSVP - don't miss this special event

The Museum SFV and the Public Art Initiative (PAI) Artist Speaker Series are pleased to present...

Sculptor and Artist Charles Sherman

Museum members, donors, Friends of The Museum SFV, local artists, valley residents and visitors are in for a real treat as YOUR Museum of history, art and culture welcome Charles Sherman on August 13, 2022.

Los Angeles-based sculptor and jewelry designer Charles Sherman was born in Atlantic City, New Jersey in 1947. His work is informed by a lifelong study of ancient civilizations, world cultures and religions. The forms he creates are minimalist, conceptual and inspired by sacred geometry. His philosophy of life and art has always been the same: to promote the positive.

Since 2002 Sherman has investigated sculptural forms that express the concept of infinity, especially the three dimensional Möbius ring and more recently, variations of the Tetrahedron form. He hand builds his clay Infinity Ring sculptures using the most primitive sculpture tools and coil or slab construction. Some sculptures are transformed into cast bronze, stainless steel or welded stainless steel.

Mosaic is a current exploration. Using glass, agates, crystals and ancient ammonite fossils he transforms the surface of geometric form with applied mosaic. In 2006 he began translating his sculptural forms into sterling silver sculpture to wear jewelry designs. In his most recent body of work, Miracle Towers, he creates forms based on the tetrahedron and variations of the pyramid in welded steel and glass mosaic.

The Museum SFV and community celebrate Juneteenth

President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation on January 1, 1863, as the nation approached its third year of bloody civil war. The proclamation declared "that all persons held as slaves" within the rebellious states "are, and henceforward shall be free."

Some African Americans celebrated as their prayers had been answered that the Emancipation Proclamation had taken effect. Enslaved slaves in the Confederate States were declared legally free.  Soldiers from the Union side, many of whom were black, marched onto plantations and across cities in the south reading small copies of the Emancipation Proclamation.

However, unfortunately, not everyone in Confederate territory would immediately be free. The Emanicpation Proclamation was made effective in 1863, but it could not be implemented in places still under Confederate control.  In the Confederate state of Texas, freedom would not officially arrive until June 19, 1865, when some 2,000 Union troops arrived in Galveston Bay, Texas. The army announced that the more than 250,000 enslaved black people in the state, were free by executive decree. This day came to be known as "Juneteenth," by the newly freed people in Texas.

Please listen to The Museum SFV's board member and President of the Pacoima Historical Society speak about her family and this holiday.
