YOUR MUSEUM HELPS TO KEEP YOU COOL!

Gary Fredburg as a boy in the great snow of 1949

Corner of Morrison and Ranchito "Our first home."
Photographs taken 13902 Morrison Street in Van Nuys, California

Museum Board Member, Gary Fredburge sends you photos of himself in cooler times --- The great snow of 1949.
Children were kept home from school, and some were terrified by something they had never seen before. Nearly everyone who lived in the San Fernando Valley at the time has a snow-story. Do you?

The San Fernando Valley deserves a great Museum of history and culture.

Today, he is one of America's most important buyers and sellers of antique paper goods. And, a terrific human being.

My own experience in that same snow event (too small to call a snowstorm) was one of personal slight. I had recently moved to L.A. from New England, where snow in the winter is quite common. On that particular evening, I was one of several kids participating in a piano recital at our teacher's home in West Hollywood. Just as I got halfway through my piece, someone yelled, "It's snowing!", and everyone - except me - jumped up and ran to the windows, or out the door, to stare at this marvel of nature. I continued playing, but seeing that they were more interested in the snow than my playing, I stopped cold and waited. I don't think anyone remembered if I had finished, or even played.

My wife Janne was a little girl, who had just been relocated to North Hollywood from Des Moines, Iowa with her parents.
Awaking to the "snowstorm", she was dressed in her Iowa snowsuit and sent off to school. When she arrived there, no more than a handful of children were there. San Fernando Valley parents allowed their kids the day off, or were fearful.
My folks had just moved me here from Washington State. I went off to St. Ferdinand's school, to discover that the snowstorm had kept 90% of the children at their homes.
