CONGRATULATIONS JOHN HERGERT

Winning Skateboard Sculpture made from Red Bull cans
by former San Fernando Valley artist John Hergert

It is widely believed that Edsel Dale Alexander of San Fernando was the first person to create the modern skateboard, in the early 1950s.

A message from Dale Alexander

Thanks for the blog info, the skateboard fact is close but of course there were many others that eventually stripped away the nailed on lug box and relied on balance and gravity, Stan (Cerveny) for one. We were Skateboarding on steel wheels nailed onto 2 X 4's in "63 sans lug boxes.

Thanks for posting the photo Dr. J. I'm humbled to be part of your art community - and thrilled with the opportunity to create work (found object and otherwise) that entices art enthusiasts.
Lastly, I can't wait to see the Museum of the San Fernando Valley. Special kudos to you and your team for developing a desperately needed addition to the region.

John Hergert came to the San Fernando Valley immediately after graduation from the University of Wisconsin Madison. He worked here until recruited to work for Marquette University in Chicago.
John is an artist - sculptor, an outstanding musician and writer.
