ENTRANCE TO THE VALLEY FROM NEWHALL

CHERISHING OUR VALLEY                   2013

Before the development of the canyon communities and the desert communities were quite little villages, coming into the Valley was a rather quiet experience. This postcard, a gift to The Museum of the San Fernando Valley from Gary Fredburg in 2013, reads:  "Fabulous San Fernando Valley. Entering the valley through the Northern Gateway, near the town of San Fernando."

CHRISTMAS ROSE AT LOPEZ ADOBE IN SAN FERNANDO

Christmas Rose in the Gardens of the Lopez Adobe in San Fernando California - Photo for the Archives of The Museum of the San Fernando Valley by Gerald Fecht - December 2009.
In the travel business there is something called "destination marketing". Very simply, it encompasses the idea that when people see a community as a destination, they tend the stay there in a hotel, eat meals, buy gifts and much more. Our San Fernando Valley communities would do themselves well by recognizing the importance of places like the Lopez Adobe to their economy.
In 2010, The Museum of the San Fernando Valley will conduct an expanded walking tour program. Local tourism, or as we call it "in-tourism" is much more than civic pride, it is a direct contribution to local economies.

American Civil Rights Leader Cesar Chavez - Mural in San Fernando California
The San Fernando Valley’s oldest city, San Fernando, was the first city in the United States to erect a memorial to the great civil rights leader Cesar E. Chavez. Located at the corner of Wolfskill and Truman Streets, the memorial was designed by San Fernando Valley artist Ignacio Gomez.

César Estrada Chavez was born on March 31st, 1927. He died on April 23, 1993. From a common farm worker, Chavez rose to found, with Dolores Hueta, what would become the United Farm Workers Union. He achievements form one of the greatest civil rights victories of the 20th century.

MAMMOTH CACTUS IN SAN FERNANDO c. 1895

2009 - The Year of Valley History

Mammoth Cactus in San Fernando c 1895 - Gift to the Archives of The Museum of the San Fernando Valley July 2009 from Dave High

Water rationing is nothing new to the San Fernando Valley. Conservation of water was a way of life to the early pioneer families who settled here in the late 1800s. This delightful photograph, part of the David High Collection, marked in pencil :"Mammouth" Cactus - San Fernando.
Fred Berk (Librarian of The Museum) and Guy Weddington McCreary have began their study of the High Collection photographs, and Fred reports, "Many of the unmarked photos have been identified already."

CHILD'S PRAYER BOOK AT EASTER - PACOIMA 1948

Pray Always - copyright 1936 - gift to The Museum of the San Fernando Valley 2009 by Gerald Fecht (click on image to enlarge)

Children in Catholic families, in the 1940s and 50s, were often given miniature prayer books at the time of their First Communion. Jerry Fecht brought this book of prayers and instructions with him from Everett, Washington. He used it during Sunday Masses at Saint Ferdinand's Church in San Fernando, when he was in the 4th grade.
In 1948, Jerry lived with his parents and older sister in a one-car, unfinished garage at 10607 Tamarack Street in Pacoima.

THE MUSEUM OF THE SAN FERNANDO VALLEY SERVES THE CITY OF SAN FERNANDO

City of San Fernando c '60s - vintage postcard in the Archives of The Museum of the San Fernando Valley - Gift of Gary Fredburg 2009 (click on image to enlarge)

A young man from Santa Barbara, who joined us this morning on The Museum's second walking tour of historic North Hollywood, remarked that those who live and work in big cities often become focused on their urban experiences, and unwittingly ignore the richness of smaller towns and cities.
One of the important communities often ignored in the hustle and bustle of Los Angeles life is the "founding city" of the Valley, the city of San Fernando.
The Museum of the San Fernando Valley is dedicated to the collection, preservation and to sharing of artifacts and information about San Fernando and its residents with the entire Valley. We are actively searching for Board members from San Fernando.
Call your Museum to help us serve San Fernando. 1 (818) 3347-9665
