Take a Tour of Historic North Hollywood This Saturday

(Photo by Lindsay William-Ross/LAist)Don't buy into the old notion that there's no history in Los Angeles. If anything, our weekly LAistory series will handily prove otherwise. But, fine, don't take our word for it. Why not take some experts' words and get out and about for yourself in the remarkably historic North Hollywood neighborhood, where you can learn about the days when the grounds were swollen with flood waters, the park was instead a massive dried-fruit operation, and Lankershim Boulevard was--okay, well, it was still Lankershim Boulevard, but it had all sorts of different shops and stops.
The Museum of the San Fernando Valley, with the support of the Universal City/North Hollywood Chamber of Commerce are doing their "Historic Walking Tour of North Hollywood" this Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. They ask for a donation of $10, and that you meet them at the Amelia Earhart Statue (Tujunga Ave. and Magnolia Boulevard). RSVPs are encouraged by email or phone at (818) 909-4729 but walk-ups are accepted.
LAist went on the tour this Spring--admittedly a little bit smugly since our own Neighborhood Project reading had us well-versed in local lore--but really enjoyed being guided around the area on foot by folks who are passionate and knowledgeable about the rich history. Fair warning: It gets hot, and there are few moments of shade or sit-down, so bring a hat, sunscreen, and some water to keep you cool. Oh, and PS: When you're done, heed the call of your own barking dogs by heading over to Vicious Dogs for some lunch.
