Jim Bateman, a high school teacher and coach for 28 years, shares this treasure of San Fernando Valley history with us. Jim lives in Chico, California.  World Series in Provo, Utah - July 1960  (click on image to enlarge it.)

Van Nuys - The East Van Nuys All-Stars are in Provo, Utah, representing the Valley region of the Western Boys Baseball Association, "world series" which opened Wednesday and concludes Saturday.

The East Valley Van Nuys squad, made up of boys 9 through 12 years of age, have defeated the Woodland Hills Twilight, Woodland Hills Sunset and Northridge All Stars to become regional champions and  (clipping damaged here.)

... homered. Manager Victor Saleeby said the team's strong points are pitching depth and balance, thje club has six hurlers, he said."

"Saleeby pitcher, Stevens catcher, Paul Fairbanks first base. Lang second base, Parcells third base, Dan Walker short stop, Jeff Polan left field, Bill Hall center field and Jim Bateman right field."

Jim wrote: "As you can imagine, it was a big deal for all of the kids and their families. I still remember the address of the family I lived with in Provo - 248 East, 840 North ...  We lost our 1st game to a team from Utah. Their pitcher hit two home runs, one a grand slam. He pitched a one-hitter.

Western Boys Baseball Assn. 1959 - Program gift tothe Archives of The Museum of the San Fernando Valley from Gary Fredburg 2010
A few months ago The Museum was contacted by a woman seeking information about her brother’s Western Boys Baseball Association team’s location. Gary Fredburg, the Secretary of The Museum went to work looking for memorabilia related to the association, and came up with this great little playoff program.
Here’s some of the information we discovered from this August 1959 program:

Northridge League
Chuck Ferrero was manager, Roy Vanwich was the coach
Players included: Craig McGarraugh, Jimmy Denman, Mike Young, David Beres, Donald Crisp, David Murray, Mike Koeller, Jay Lombardi, John Cleveland, Lorrie Walkuw, Chuck Ferrero, Keith McGrew, Mike Gierman and Tommy Workman.

Northridge All Stars
Joseph Sieler was the manager - coach was Murray Lifft
Players were: Gregg Wood, Terry Benson, Dave Whitson, John Foeneris, Mike Milner, Bob Caldwell, Leil Ball, Mike Cannata, John Hicks, Paul Anderson, Joe Flippo, Larry Lynoff, Larry Swanson and Jim Rikel

East Van Nuys Team
Bud Adams was manager and Harrold Bahrke was the coach.
The players were: Jim Walker, Brian Safian, Kenny Chandler, Gary Adams, Ronnie Pettigrew, Richard Bahrke, Tyler Hancock, Robbie Boulger, Dave Bridenstine, Robbie Swink, Richard Schafer, John Bolognia, Kerry Casey and Scott Purcell.

Woodland Hills Team
Manager R.S. Bingham, and coach Phil Stevens
Players were: Tom Dunderdale, Pete Hallenbeck, Gregg Sterbins, Rick Havland, Gary Bingham, Rick Gouin, Rick Haynes, Keith Clapp, Bruce Stevens, John Smith, Larry Holmes, Erland Gulbrand, Jack Haller and Jim Smith.

Pat Nault is still trying to identify where the Western Boys Baseball League was located
in the San Fernando Valley. She sends this image along in hope that one of you baseball fans will be able to fill her in on the details. Her brother Jim, one of the lads in the photograph, is now deceased - so it's up to the Museum Community.

WESTERN BOYS BASEBALL ASSOCIATION INFORMATION SOUGHT

We have a friend of The Museum who is seeking information about a boys' baseball team (in the 1950s) who were wearing t shirts with the "Western Boys Baseball Association on an outside circle and the inside reads, East Valley Van Nuys."
No information is known about this League somewhere around 1953 - 55.
