OTTO'S PINK PIG 1945 - 1979

CHERISHING OUR VALLEY      2012

In 1945, as World War II came to a close, Otto Nassar opened his restaurant, The Pink Pig in what was then Van Nuys - now, Sherman Oaks, California. The place, which originally looked like a cafe off Route 66, was modest in decor and great in food. The fact that celebrities such as Dorothy Lamore and Bob Hope ate there, when returning from long days on the set in the "country", soon made The Pink Pig a destination place in Los Angeles.

The restauranteur added his name to Otto Nassar's Pink Pig, when he remodeled the place in the late 50's. Located at 4958 Van Nuys Boulevard, a short distance north of Riverside Drive, "The Pig" remained open until 1979.

LANKERSHIM COMMONWEALTH BANK HEADS TOWARD DESTRUCTION

CHERISHING OUR VALLEY        2012

Museum Associate Bob Peppermuller has sent us two of the final photographs of the historic Commonwealth Building on Lankershim in North Hollywood. The structure failed to gain an historic monument status from the Los Angeles Cultural Heritage Commission. Closing the structure as a Citibank branch, is the first step toward tearing down the Valley's first high-rise commercial building and replacing it with an apartment complex.

PROMOTIONAL IMAGES OF ROY ROGERS BUILD MUSEUM'S NOTABLES ARCHIVE

CHERISHING OUR VALLEY   2012

These two great promotional photographs of the famous Roy Rogers are important additions to The Museum's archive of notable San Fernando Valley residents. A gift from Linda O'Connor, the two images are particularly useful for The Museum's Horses Across The Valley project.

VAN NUYS BAPTISTS ONCE HAD A FAMOUS CHOIR

CHERISHING OUR VALLEY        2012

At one time, the Van Nuys community celebrated the Christmas season in a big way. There was a very popular "Nativity Christmas Parade" in which nearly of the area's Christian churches participated with festive floats. Each float depicted a different part of the life of Jesus. Catholics almost always featured a float about the Annunciation to the Virgin Mary.
By the late 1970s, the First Baptist Church, under the leadership of Rev. Jess Moody, had grown into one of the most powerful religious organizations in the Valley (it remains such today in its new location in Porter Ranch and under its new name Shepherd of the Hills church. The church no longer maintains a large adult choir.

VIEW FROM THE ALMEROTH HOUSE IN NORTHRIDGE EARLY 1950s

CHERISHING OUR VALLEY         2012

Among the recent Northridge Boys Baseball memorabilia sent to The Museum of the San Fernando Valley from Pete Almeroth, is this snapshot of Northridge taken in the early 1950s. The house was at 17353 Willard Street.  The photograph was taken from the roof, "looking north?" toward Roscoe (Boulevard).
"Notice the incinerator in the yard to the left. Everybody had one. Also check out the little white dots at the top of the photo, not sure."  Pete Almeroth 2012.

The little white dots are above the clouds and just above the utility lines.

Here's a close up of the little white dots that Pete mentions:

ANTHONY WILKINSON PANORAMA CITY LEADER

CHERISHING OUR VALLEY         2012

 Tony Wilkinson 2012

-->

When I was an impoverished graduate student at USC, I shared what was supposed to be an apartment with Tony Wilkinson in the Saint James Park area of Los Angeles. We were both amazingly poor but had a great time making the most of living in the city.
Anthony Wilkinson was born in 1942. He came to USC in 1960 from Santa Barbara, where we were members of Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity. Years passed and I reconnected with Tony in the effort to expand The Museum of the San Fernando Valley's services to the community of Panorama City.
In 2012, Tony Wilkinson is an independent Civic and Social Organization professional. He is the outgoing president of the Panorama City Neighborhood Council and has served at the vice chairman of the Council and its finance chairman.

CIRCLE DRIVE HOUSE AND AQUEDUCT IN 1922

Special thanks to Gary Fredburg, Director of Acquisitions for The Museum of the San Fernando Valley, for the gift of these two important photographs taken in 1922.

Comment by Richard Hilton:  "Circle drive is where Chandler curves around onto Van Nuys Boulevard.  Just north of that was the Whitley mansion which I think this is, but the connundrum it had already been sold to someone else and they were selling it in April, 1922.  The elevation of the blog photo is exactly the Whitley mansion, but the windows on the second story, even though close, have been modified from the original look as built.  The driveway seen in your photo, is the lefthand section of the circle drive which was in front of the house."
The house above has been identified as the The Whitley House in Van Nuys.

FALL SLIPS AWAY GRACEFULLY IN SHERMAN OAKS

CHERISHING OUR VALLEY      2012

The Canadian geese have arrived in the San Fernando Valley. I heard their seasonal honking as I put my car away last Friday. The steady rains came on December 1 and 2, just as predicted. Here's a photograph that I took of a tree in Carolyn Urhi's front yard, when we were on our way to an arts and culture of the San Fernando Valley meeting at the Department of Cultural Affairs. Fall in Southern California has a privacy not readily seen by newcomers. (click on image to enlarge it.)

AIRPLANES IN HAVENHURST AVE. LOBBY

CHERISHING OUR VALLEY     2012

I hope that all of us in The Museum Community make it a habit to carry around a light weight camera. The San Fernando Valley teems with opportunities to see our region's creativity in action. Here are three panels from the entrance to an office building near the Van Nuys Airport.
