CHERISHING OUR VALLEY                   2013

Today, I left Tarzana and began my trek through Encino.  Day 17 of my walk across the Valley on Ventura Boulevard. An Israeli and Persian Jewish neighborhood.

 In case you missed the address of this colorful building, it's 18018 Ventura Boulevard.

 I did an Internet search on this Drone poster, but couldn't find anything about it. Anybody know?

 Encino Creek adds water to the Los Angeles River, year round.

The first Mass celebrated by Our Lady of Grace parish in Encino was held in the packing room of Canoga Farms on Ventura Boulevard. It was conducted by a discalced Carmelite priest Father Patrick Collins.  This ceremony dedicating the American flag was probably held in September of 1947 with the opening of the Carmelite Catholic school there.

Just across Ventura Boulevard from the Encino Development Company, dedication ceremony of Our Lady of Grace Catholic parish at the south western corner of White Oak Avenue and Ventura Boulevard c. 1947.  Bequest to The Museum from the estate of Catherine Olson, who was a parishioner there.  (click on image to enlarge)

SISTERS OF THE IMACULATE HEART OF MARY TAUGHT IN ENCINO

In 1947, seven Catholic nuns opened an elementary school at Our Lady of Grace parish in Encino. The teaching sisters were members of the Religious Order of the Immaculate Heart of Mary. Their former convent now serves as the parish offices.

In the chapel of the convent of Our Lady of Grace parish, this stained glass window was presented to the teaching sisters to celebrate the Holy Year of 1950. Note the triple crown of Pope Pius XII with his insignia crest of doves.
