Still sung today, "Buttons and Bows" was a smash musical hit from the Paramount Picture, The Paleface. The film starred two of America's favorite performers of the era, Jane Russell and Bob Hope. Jane was a graduate of Van Nuys High School, and Bob Hope resided in Toluca Lake over his lifetime.

HOWARD HUGHES AND THE SAN FERNANDO VALLEY

A monumental figure in the history of the San Fernando Valley was Howard Hughes. A film-maker, adventurer, and builder of remarkable aircraft, Hughes left an indelible mark on American aviation and the history of the San Fernando Valley.

From 1941 to 1943, Howard Hughes was engaged in the making of the motion picture "The Outlaw".  The film starred Van Nuys High School graduate, Jane Russell. (click on image to enlarge it.)

 Glendale, California c. 1932. Hughes Aircraft Company built the H-1, a plane that would break the land plane speed record.  In addition to Hughes, there were 12 employees of the company,

In 1936, design engineer Dick Palmer and Howard Hughes built the H1 racer. Hughes flew the craft from Burbank to Newark, New Jersey in just under 7 1/2 hours.

Few places in the world has and has had more celebrity residents than the San Fernando Valley. Van Nuys High School has an impressive list of notables among its graduates, including the beautiful movie star Jane Russell.

When Paramount at Christmastime in 1948 released its popular film, The Paleface, the studio probably wasn’t thinking about making San Fernando Valley history. But, it did. The movie’s two big stars, Bob Hope and Jane Russell were among the many reasons why we called the San Fernando Valley, the heart of the creative capital of the world.
Jane Russell did her first serious acting while she attended Van Nuys High School. She was considered the sexiest woman in American, that is until her crown was stolen by another Van Nuys High School girl, Marilyn Monroe.
Bob Hope, when he wasn’t on the road doing performances and USO shows lived in the privacy of Toluca Lake. Appropriately, Bob Hope is buried in the San Fernando Valley in the Catholic cemetery in Mission Hills.

One of the biggest motion picture celebrities of the 1940s was Van Nuys High School graduate, Jane Russell. Contracted by Howard Hughes, Jane would become one of the great symbols of her era. This image is part of The Museum of the San Fernando Valley's growing collection of "Valley notables."
