The great Harry James was one of the most important performers of the Big Band Era in the late 1930s and 1940s. His trumpet was recognized world-wide. James' band began in Philadelphia and was the first to employ the amazing Frank Sinatra.
Harry James lived in Woodland Hills, with his wife the equally famous Betty Grable. Race horses bred on their ranch were American champions. James often collaborated with Frank Sinatra who lived in Toluca Lake at the time.

Join The Museum, Councilmember Mitchell Englander, the Kiwanis Club of Northridge and the LA Department of Recreation and Parks at Northridge Recreation Center for this FREE fun-filled family event! Enjoy music, food, art, live performances and Dreamwork's movie "Puss in Boots."
The Museum will be exhibiting some great photos and artifacts for you to enjoy while at the event. Also members of the Museum's Public Art Initiative will be working with the children creating various arts and crafts projects including building a city of boxes.

Mitch notes on his Facebook page that " Mike's Pizza was behind the store, a valley fixture for a long time and they made the greatest garlic rolls. Manager's office shared the same wall as the oven and the smell was overwhelming, but they gave us a bag of rolls every day."

OLD HEIDELBERG WAS ONCE A FAVORITE GERMAN RESTAURANT IN THE VALLEY

Just west of LA Valley College on Oxnard Street in Van Nuys, Hoppe's Old Heidelberg German restaurant once served wonderful food and great beer. It was an especially fun place to visit in October. Dishes such as a two pound pork shank proved too much for a weight conscious Valley clientele.

In the 1950s, Valley residents who wanted to learn to ski might have considered Harold Larson's Viking Ski Center at 13733 Ventura Boulevard in Sherman Oaks. These great photographs are shared with The Museum Community by Priscilla Shipstad.

ACTOR EDIN GALI VISITS MUSEUM SPACE IN SHERMAN OAKS

A recurring statement made by members of our Museum Community is that "the San Fernando Valley is in the very heart of the entertainment capital of the world." Nearly everyone who visits our Expo Space in the Westfield Fashion Square mall relates to the memorabilia and images of the many performers and films related to Valley history. Actors, screen writers and those who work in the many crafts related to film, television and video games regularly visit the site.
Among the most recent was the up and coming young actor Edin Gali, the recurring guest-star of the AMC television show "Mad Men," an Emmy nominated production. He plays the role of Kurt Smith.
Edin Gali was born in Bosnia, attended elementary schools in Germany and came with his family to Saint Louis, Missouri where he completed his education at Melville Senior High School. He studied acting under Sharon Pfitzinger before moving to the San Fernando Valley to pursue his career as a film and television actor. Edin resides in Valley Village. He has appeared in television commercials for Dr. Pepper, Wrigley, and Maxwell House Coffee.

The Museum of the San Fernando Valley actively collects and safeguards music and music artifacts related to Valley life and culture.

ARTHUR D. ASTON A FOUNDER OF VALLEY PRESBYTERIAN HOSPITAL

Arthur D. Aston Sr. died on March 15, 2000, He was the winner of the 1974 Fernando Award, now in the archives of The Museum of the San Fernando Valley. (The coveted award is on exhibit at The Museum's Expo Space at the Westfield Fashion Square Mall.

Mr. Aston, who was a leader of Valley Federal Savings was also a founder of Valley Presbyterian Hospital. He was 88 years old when he died.

MEMORIES OF WOODMAN AVENUE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

Few San Fernando Valley residents remember Los Angeles Woodman Avenue Elementary School today. The school, determined unsafe for earthquakes, was demolished in 1960. Woodman Elementary not only served its Sherman Oaks neighborhood but also provided public education for the boys who lived in the nearby McKinley Home for Boys. It was located on the southwest corner of Woodman Avenue and Riverside Drive, opposite of Notre Dame High School. Made of un-reinforced brick, the building was determined in 1958 to be seismically unsafe. The property was sold, making way for the beginning of the Westfield Fashion Square Mall that dominates the area today.
Exteriors scenes of the popular motion picture, The Boy With Green Hair was filmed at Woodman Elementary School in 1948. The film made a star of a young Dean Stockwell.
