"Too Windy - Be Back" Mural on the west side of Louise at Saticoy. Is this our Amelia?

Only five houses east of where I spent my last two years during high school, at Louise and Saticoy Streets in Van Nuys is this neat little mural. I think on of the characters is our Valley heroine Amelia Earhart, but have know idea of who "Too Windy" pig is?
Have any ideas?

SACRED IMAGES FROM SAINT BRIGIT OF SWEDEN IN VAN NUYS

Statue of Saint Jude Thaddeus in the church of Saint Brigit of Sweden in Van Nuys - photo for the Archives of The Museum of the San Fernando Valley by Gerald Fecht 2010 - click on image to enlarge.
Saint Jude Thaddeus is a much beloved spiritual presence among Roman Catholic and other Apostolic Christians. One of the 12 disciples of Jesus, he was largely neglected by medieval Christians due to his name "Judas" easily confused with Judas Iscariot the betrayer of Jesus. Since he was forgotten about, a devotion to Saint Jude grew as the protector of the forgotten - or as the patron saint of hopeless cases. For generations those with cancer were considered hopeless. The great performer Danny Thomas promised that if Jude would protect him in his effort to become a successful entertainer, he would in turn build Saint Jude a hospital for cancer-ridden children.

Saint Brigit of Sweden is a Roman Catholic parish in a working class part of Van Nuys. It has a truly beautiful array of stained glass windows, and is often open for a respectful public to visit.

WHAT WAS IN THE THOUGHTS OF CANOGA PARK GRADUATES JUNE 1945

2010 THE YEAR OF VALLEY ADVENTURES

31st Annual Summer Commencement Canoga Park High School June 1945 - Gift to The Museum of the San Fernando Valley from Gary Fredburg 2010
As I prepared this little program for its home in the Archives of The Museum, I wondered what must have been in the thoughts of the boys and girls who graduated that long ago summer evening in 1945. Birmingham Hospital (now Birmingham High School) was preparing for a massive number of American wounded from an invasion of the Japanese mainland. World War II would be over in September, but the kids and families of the Canoga Park High School graduates had only hope to rely on for "normal" lives. Now in their 80s, wouldn't be great to learn about their thoughts that June.

HONEY PRODUCTION A LASTING PART OF SAN FERNANDO VALLEY HISTORY

2010 THE YEAR OF VALLEY ADVENTURES

Honey Bee Culture - Rancho Los Encinos - date unknown - detail from gift to The Museum of the San Fernando Valley from Marc Wanamaker 2010 (click on image to enlarge)

Mentioned in early Spanish accounts of the Tongva people, who resided for centuries in the San Fernando Valley, was their love of honey and its importance to their culture. Honey, prior to the introduction of cane and beet sugar, was the primary sweetening agent in the era of Spanish ranchos. European honeybees were critical to the development of the California citrus industry and enabled early American settlers to produce great orchards of apricots and peaches.

Suggesting the curative properties of raw honey, La Miel Jireh of 12915 San Fernando Road in Symar, sells a variety of honeys including flavors influenced by orange, sage and wild flower. The Spanish word "miel" means honey. The name arrived in Iberia with the Roman conquest and came to Rome from the ancient Greeks. Mil indicates sweetness, hence women's names like Melissa. Check out La Miel Jireh at www.lamieljireh.com

The San Fernando Valley, in the heart of the Creative Capital of the World, deserves a great Museum of history and culture.

SAN FERNANDO VALLEY TROPICAL BIRD FARM IN THE 1930s

2010 THE YEAR OF VALLEY HISTORY

(detail from a gift to the Archives of The Museum of the San Fernando Valley by Myron Ross 2010 - click to enlarge)

While this image, taken in 1933, is usually seen in histories of Encino, the two delivery trucks have a Van Nuys address. Perhaps, a little parochial excitement might just come of this?
The San Fernando Valley had several providers of wild animals and unusual birds, after all what would a good Tarzan movie been without a lion or two, and a romantic On The Road To... film been without a disapproving cockatoo?
