BUILDING A GREAT MUSEUM IN THE SAN FERNANDO VALLEY

Few people better exemplify the impact of the lives of individuals, whose lives and careers are part of San Fernando Valley history, have made on America and Southern California than Linda Sterling.

Dr. Linda Sterling (PhD. English UCLA) began her creative life's journey as a showgirl. In the 1940s Linda performed in films for Republic Pictures, mostly in serial movies. Perhaps her most recognized is her title role in the "Tiger Woman" in the 1940s. She continued her work in film and television into the 1960's.

When she started her family, Linda Sterling redirected her life as a professional educator. She became a professor of English at Glendale College, where she worked from 1967 until 1990. She died in Studio City.

A LOVE AFFAIR WITH AUTOMOBILES - A SAN FERNANDO VALLEY STORY

CHERISHING OUR VALLEY            2013

     Cities built on islands or crowded peninsulas seldom have the collective love affairs with the automobile as those existing in the wide open spaces of the American West. This is especially true of the San Fernando Valley, that until very recently has been composed of distant and unconnected suburbs. A dependance on automobiles and buses was cinched when the Los Angeles Railway system was destroyed by what many call a conspiracy of bus suppliers to acquire control of the Railway and dismantle it starting in 1944. By the 1960s, the red cars of the Pacific Electric Railway were just a distant memory. The corporations were General Motors, Chevron, Philips Petroleum, Goodyear and Mack Truck. 

     The car companies' public relations firms immediately set out to romanticize automobiles are essential to the "good life" emerging in the San Fernando Valley and Los Angeles.

By the 1960s hotels in the San Fernando Valley, with the exception of areas near the theme parks,  had all but disappeared. They were replaced by motels of differing quality and standards.

Hitchhiking on the collectible nature of the antique automobile cards featured above, some car dealerships began to print introductions to their new vehicles via mass mailings or souvenirs of a visit to new car introduction events.

One of the greatest automobile collections in the United States is in the North San Fernando Valley. It also houses one of the largest automotive libraries in the world.

HANNA BARBERA - KINGS OF TELEVISION ANIMATION

DISCOVERING OUR VALLEY    2011

Animation has long played a major role in San Fernando Valley culture and economy. Among the great stories of television animation was the partnership of William Hanna and Joseph Barbera.  The two historic animators formed Hanna Barbera in 1957 and sold the company a decade later. From their headquarters in Studio City, Hanna Barbera changed American entertainment history.

PACIFIC ELECTRIC RR STATION ON SHERMAN WAY IN VAN NUYS

DISCOVERING OUR VALLEY  2011

At the conclusion of The Museum's recent historic walking tour of historic North Hollywood, Mr. Bob Peppermuller mentioned his interest in finding historic photographs of the Pacific Electric Picover freight station on Sherman Way just west of the Van Nuys Airport.

The Museum Community wants to help Mr. Peppermuller locate the images he's looking for, but also photographs of Abner's Yellow Barn before it burned down.

ROBERT MARKO PHI DELTA PSI FRATERNTIY

Commemoration Card 1990 for Robert Marko - Gift to the Archives of The Museum of the San Fernando Valley by Jerry Berns September 2008 (click on image to enlarge) The small enameled pin at the top right is a Maple Leaf Pledge Pin.

Robert Marko was a major student leader in the San Fernando Valley in the 1960s. He was the President of the Phi Delta Psi Fraternity's Beta Chapter at Los Angeles Pierce College. He died on the 15th of January, 1990.
