GLYCERINE "WATER" FALLS AT THE TOPANGA MALL

BUILDING A GREAT MUSEUM FOR THE SAN FERNANDO VALLEY

Around 1967, the Topanga Mall installed a really interesting glycerine waterfall. Beads of glycerine, about the size of water drops, moved as if in slow motion down wires of mono-filament fishing lines. The effect was dramatic. No doubt the glycerine drops attracted dust resulting in real clogging problems. But, while the fountains last, they were exceptional.

MARDI GRAS AT PIERCE COLLEGE 1967

2010  THE YEAR OF VALLEY ADVENTURES

You can tell a lot about what sorts of artifacts and photographs are arriving to your Museum, by the photographs posted on this blog. Since each in-coming picture gets an identification number and is scanned for our records, blog viewers often get a peek at what is being recorded. The following photographs taken from a photo album kept by pledges of the Phi Delta Psi Fraternity in the Spring of 1967, allows us to visit Mardi Gras on the Pierce College Campus, 43 years ago.

GREAT PIERCE COLLEGE "RUSSIAN INVASION" WATERFIGHT 1967

Phi Deta Psi pledges at Pierce College prepare for their Spring waterfight - photo gift to The Museum of the San Fernando Valley from Jerry Berns 2009 -  refer to photo 2060

The Cold War was a very real thing to Americans in the 1960s, and college students responded to the threat with typical youthful bravado. Here LA Pierce College students, pledges in the Phi Delta Psi Fraternity, held a spring water fight with active members of the organization calling it the Russian Invasion. Today alumni of the Fraternity through their Maple Leaf Society are among The Museum's strongest supporters.

A VIETNAM CHRISTMAS DINNER

2010  THE YEAR OF VALLEY ADVENTURES

There's a German word, popular in World War Ii movies, called "ersatz".  To my understanding, the word means a synthetic that just doesn't measure up to the real thing. I suppose that half the problem with a synthetic is the promise that it will taste or smell like fresh strawberries when it's closer to "mystery meat."

25 December 1967 - Christmas Dinner menu and holiday message to American Marines in Vietnam.
Gift to The Museum of the San Fernando Valley from Jerry Berns 2010.

Less sensitive to religious diversity than modern military officials, the leadership of the US Marine Corps during the Vietnam War made the above assumption that their enlisted men and women shared their preferences.
(click on this menu to read Jerry Berns' notes on the menu he saved from his service as a Marine during the Vietnam War.)
Tomato Juice Cocktail - none
Shrimp Cocktail, Saltines - none left
Scotch Broth - Didn't have it.
Roasted Turkey - canned, overcooked - dry
Cornbread Dressing - Didn't have it.
Baked Ham - Canned - Not bad.

HODY'S DRIVE IN - VAN NUYS, CALIFORNIA

Hody's Drive In Restaurant 1967 - vintage postcard given to the archives of The Museum of the San Fernando Valley by Gary Fredburg 2009. (click on image to enlarge)

In the year 2000, Van Horn, Iowa had a population of 216 people. I wonder how many people it had when R&S wrote this post card featuring Hody's Restaurant on the corner of Sepulveda and Victory in Van Nuys in 1967? On a good night, the Van Nuys Drive In Theater would have had more than 216 people in its audience?
San Fernando - July 11, 1967 Sat. PM
Hi, Arrive there about 12:30 PM. Wonderful weather all the way. Had lunch at Betty's.
My glasses just fell into in Las Vegas at nose piece. Had to buy new frames. Hot today. Love R&S"
