SACRED SPACES IN THE SAN FERNANDO VALLEY

Church and Baptistry of the Mission San Fernando Rey de EspaƱa
Vintage postcard - Gift to The Museum of the San Fernando Valley
from Gary Fredburg 2015

Among the earliest communities of Christians, (Romans, Greeks, Syrians etc.) those just learning about the religion (catechumens) were excluded from witnessing the sacrament of the Eucharist until they were baptized. Separate buildings or chambers were designated as "baptistries". (One of the most famous of these is the Baptistry of the Cathedral of Florence - a copy of its doors  is in the museum at Forest Lawn in Glendale.)
Looking between the two tall palms in this vintage postcard, we can see a pathway leading to the Baptistry of the Mission San Fernando Rey, a separate building from the historic church. Native Americans and others who had not been baptized were given instruction here and baptized into the Christian religion.

A VALLEY FULL OF SURPRISES (Part 3)

VALLEY MARKET TOWN
Vintage postcard - gift to The Museum from Gary Fredburg 2015

In the 1950s, the villages of the edges of San Fernando Valley were poorly
connected by unsure surface streets. Towns like Canoga Park and Sylmar had
occasional festivals and parades, but young families had little reliable entertainment
or shopping options. Perhaps a sign of the vast malls to come, Valley Market Town
emerged on Sepulveda Boulevard.
Do you recall the kiddie rides or snack shops at Valley Market Town?
Make your  memories  or photographs of Valley Market Town part of our history.

A VALLEY FULL OF SURPRISES (Part 2)

RESEDA PARK c. 1960s
Vintage postcard - gift to The Museum of the San Fernando Valley
from Gary Fredburg 2015

One of the things I love most about the San Fernando Valley is how the public makes use of its parks and recreational spaces. From birthday parties to afternoon walks, the Valley's parks are beehives of activity. The Museum's files on the histories of our parks and constantly revised plans for their use, grow every day. Just this week, for example, The Museum's library has added a dozen yearbooks on Little Leagues in Granada Hills and Northridge.
A fascinating history of sports and recreation in the San Fernando Valley grows daily in The Museum's archives. From our treasured photographs of the first Valley bicycles (brought from Brighton, England by the Smith family founders of North Hollywood), to Frank Sinatra singing the Stars Spangled Banner opening a baseball game at Birmingham Hospital (now High School), to the arrival of AYSO soccer leagues, sports play a major role in Valley history. Our school football programs not only relate athletic history but genuine works of art.

A VALLEY OF SURPRISES (Part 1)

A VALLEY OF ENDLESS SURPRISES

Sepulveda Pass Tunnel
Postcard gift to The Museum from Gary Fredburg October 2015

Do you have any idea of what a half million dollars in 1930 would be worth today? Well, that amount is actually a little less than what the Sepulveda Pass tunnel cost when it was opened in 1930. Most drivers who use the 405 freeway today are unaware that the tunnel, which took 8 years to build, still carries traffic from the west side into the San Fernando Valley.
Many Valley residents can recall how a rush hour accident in the two lane pass could cause hours and hours delay.
Today, there is much debate about the possibility of a light-rail system through the Sepulveda Pass. Your memories about Valley transportation and opinions about its future are important to your Museum. Share them with The Museum Community today.             comments by Jerry Fecht

YOUR COLLECTION CAN BECOME YOUR LEGACY

Personal collections often form valuable additions to your Museum's archives. They can form the basis for important insights and exhibits for the public and scholars about what life has been like in the San Fernando Valley over the years and what might become of us in the future.
Don't let the articles you've carefully collected over the years end up as someone else's quick sale on e-bay or worse yet an addition to a "blue bin."

Contact your Museum's Director of Acquisitions, Gary Fredburg right away. He'll help you with a formal "deed of gift" or suggestions about tax deductions. Give Gary a telephone call today: His Museum number is 818-347-9665.

VAN NUYS HISTORIC WALKING TOUR (10/10/15)

LAST TOUR FOR 2015
The development entity known as The Syndicate began the process in 1910, but William Paul Whitsett saw it through to the end. Originally a barley field, Van Nuys became a prosperous center of City Government, agriculture and industry.

Come explore what remains to be appreciated: original 1911 buildings hidden beneath modern facades, first churches, a civic center with many special revelations, one of the main hubs of social and official activity, the Women's Club building, Los Angeles Historic Cultural Monuments #201, #202, and #911, and National Register of Historic Places Monument #2509.

Learn about the origin of the Daily News and the company which was a nationwide maker of silent movie theatre organs. Who were Hobart Johnstone Whitley, Wayne E. Bechtelheimer and Whitley Van Nuys Huffaker? Relive "Wednesday Nights on Van Nuys Boulevard." We will have historic photographs and stories to share as we wander this surprisingly historic San Fernando Valley treasure.
