Hooray for Cupid’s Hot Dogs with its recent 70th anniversary

May 22, 2016

The Museum applauds Cupid’s on its recent 70th anniversary of serving up delicious hot dogs.

Richard and Bernice Walsh, started the business in North Hollywood, and it was first called Walsh’s Hot Dogs. Soon afterward, Richard changed it to Cupid’s, his wife’s nickname.

Cupid’s Hot Dogs, a popular, family-owned business, now consists of three small eateries with classic hot dogs and various toppings and is a local favorite eatery.

“We’ve made it through three generations. I don’t know how many businesses in the area have gotten this far,” said Kelly Walsh and sister Morgan run the chain, now in its third generation.

Two locations are in the valley, one on Vanowen St. in Canoga Park, which opened in 1962; on Lindley Ave. in Northridge, just across the street from CSUN's Valley Performing Arts Center, which opened in 1964.  The third location is in Simi Valley on Cochran St. opened in 1988.

Kelly and Morgan's late father, Rick, a Northridge resident, took over the business in 1982 and sold off two other Cupid’s. Kelly and Morgan took over the remaining eateries when their dad died in 2009.

For the 5/22 anniversary, hot dogs were discounted 70 percent.

So, stop on in, say hello to the family and keep Cupid's offering juicy, tasty hot dogs for the next 70 years!

Tell us about a time when you went to Cupid's.

Alan Young, the Voice of Mister Ed dies at age 96

From CNN:

Alan Young, who played the hapless yet protective owner of a talking horse on the popular television comedy "Mister Ed," died at age 96, per the Motion Picture & Television Home in Woodland Hills, CA.

He died Thursday of natural causes with his children at his side, the organization said.
Young also was a well-received voice actor, with appearances as Scrooge McDuck in many Disney productions and as Farmer Smurf and other characters in the 1980s-era cartoon.

Young appeared on several shows before being cast as Wilbur Post on "Mister Ed," which became one of the most popular shows of the early 1960s. One of his previous shows, "The Alan Young Show," won a prime-time Emmy.

According to a 1990 story in the Los Angeles Times, famed comedian George Burns financed "Mister Ed" and told his co-owner they should cast Young because "he looks like the kind of guy a horse would talk to."

Young told the newspaper that Wilbur Post was bumbling while Mister Ed was wily.

"I think it's the same chemistry that made Laurel and Hardy, and Jackie Gleason and Art Carney," he said. "It's the one guy making a fool of the other guy."

The show, which ran weekly from 1961 until 1966, featured a horse who talked (with help from a never-seen human voice actor) but Mister Ed spoke only to his owner, much to Wilbur Post's frustration.

Young had 101 acting credits, according to the Internet Movie Database, including the 1960 science fiction film "The Time Machine." He made many guest appearances on television after taking a long break after the end of "Mister Ed."

WINNER ANNOUNCEMENT!

HORSES ACROSS THE VALLEY (HATV)
SELECTS ITS NEXT ARTIST!

The Museum and Northridge/South Neighborhood Council (NSNC) are pleased to announce their selection of Ingrid Elburg as the designer of NSNC’s horse, which horse is part of The Museum’s HATV Neighborhood Council Sponsorship Program.   Through a call to Valley visual artists, NSNC received a wide array of submissions that reflected a diverse range of artistic styles and Northridge historical events.  In the end, the NSNC Board was overwhelmingly won over by Ms. Elburg’s vision.

INGRID ELBURG

HATV is a public art and fundraising program under The Museum developed to raise awareness of the historical, cultural and artistic heritage of the San Fernando Valley. The Neighborhood Council Program is an affordable way for any given neighborhood council to secure a full-sized fiberglass decorated horse with the goal of focusing the horse’s design on its local community’s history and activities.  Placement of the horse will be located within the neighborhood council district’s boundaries.

Ingrid. Elburg, who lives in Van Nuys, is a visual arts teacher at Hancock Elementary School and Cathedral Chapel School. Originally from Suriname and then the Netherlands, Ingrid’s work has been shown in Europe and the United States.

This is The Museum’s second horse sponsored through the HATV Neighborhood Council Program.  The first horse was sponsored by the Greater Valley Glen Neighborhood Council, designed by artist Cheryl Goettemoeller and is awaiting finalization of its placement location.
