Please join us for a special Museum Speaker Series!

On the first Saturday of each month, The Museum is pleased to offer Museum members and guests, "Conversations with Heroes," a discussion with a Veteran from WWII, Korea, Vietnam, Iraq or Afghanistan veterans that will share first-hand war stories and experiences.

Lively, graphic and telling stories that will have you walking away better informed as to the challenges, emotions and friendships made in becoming a veteran.

PACOIMA MURAL WALKING TOUR (2/21/15)

PACOIMA MURAL WALKING TOURS

ROUTE CHANGES

Join us on this guided walking tour of 10 murals along Van Nuys Blvd. Learn the history of murals in the Northeast Valley, hear the inspiration and meet the artists. Tour guides are local artists that have been involved in the creation of the murals. Special guests speakers on selected tours. 

Wear comfortable shoes. Bring umbrellas, caps, sunscreen and/or water bottles anything you may need to make the walk comfortable for you.

ROUTE CHANGES - After listening to feedback about the tours for the past year, we decided to shorten the tour and make it a completely walking tour. The walk spans from Brandley Ave to Telfair Ave (a little over 1 mile.)

After the tour Myke's Cafe is offering a free agua fresca (pinapple, fruit punch or horchata) with meal purchase to tour attendees.

American Legion History

The American Legion was chartered by Congress in 1919 as a patriotic veterans organization. Focusing on service to veterans, service members and communities, the Legion evolved from a group of war-weary veterans of World War I into one of the most influential non-profit groups in the United States. Membership swiftly grew to over 1 million, and local posts sprang up across the country. 

Today, membership stands at over 2.4 million in 14,000 posts worldwide. The posts are organized into 55 departments: one each for the 50 states, along with the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, France, Mexico and the Philippines. 

Over the years, the Legion has influenced considerable social change in America, won hundreds of benefits for veterans and produced many important programs for children and youth.

VFW History

The VFW traces its roots back to 1899 when veterans of the Spanish-American War (1898) and the Philippine Insurrection (1899-1902) founded local organizations to secure rights and benefits for their service: Many arrived home wounded or sick. There was no medical care or veterans’ pension for them,and they were left to care for themselves.

In their misery, some of these veterans banded together and formed organizations with what would become known as the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States. After chapters were formed in Ohio, Colorado and Pennsylvania, the movement quickly gained momentum. By 1915, membership grew to 5,000; by 1936, membership was almost 200,000.

Since then, the VFW’s voice had been instrumental in establishing the Veterans Administration, creating a GI bill for the 20th century, the development of the national cemetery system and the fight for compensation for Vietnam vets exposed to Agent Orange and for veterans diagnosed with Gulf War Syndrome. In 2008, VFW won a long-fought victory with the passing of a GI Bill for the 21st Century, giving expanded educational benefits to America’s active-duty service members, and members of the Guard and Reserves, fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan.
 
The VFW also has fought for improving VA medical centers services for women veterans.
Besides helping fund the creation of the Vietnam, Korean War, World War II and Women in Military Service memorials, the VFW in 2005 became the first veterans’ organization to contribute to building the new Disabled Veterans for Life Memorial, which opened in November 2010.
 
Annually, the 1.9 million members of the VFW and its Auxiliary contribute more than 8.6 million hours of volunteerism in the community, including participation in Make A Difference Day and National Volunteer Week.
 
From providing over $3 million in college scholarships and savings bonds to students every year, to encouraging elevation of the Department of Veterans Affairs to the president’s cabinet, the VFW is here to support.

GARY OWENS - RADIO ANNOUNCER - DIES AT 80

Gary Owens, the popular radio announcer died on February 12th at the age of 80

 

One of his favorite lines was, "From beautiful downtown Burbank." 

Gary played the wacky announcer in the TV comedy series Rowan & Martin's Laugh-In from 1968-1973.

Following, he worked on commercials, variety specials, radio shows, cartoons and theme park announcements that turned his voice into one of the most famous in show business.
