Today, I was the guest speaker on behalf of The Museum Community at the San Fernando (city) Kiwanis Club. The food was homemade and terrific, and the hospitality warm and friendly. I discussed how great museums, like the Olympic Games demonstrate a region or city's power, and the ability to accomplish great things.

The Elks Temple of San Fernando was established in 1927, and built this structure in 1931. The historic facility is located at 804 Pico Street in San Fernando.

The Wild Goose was at one time considered one of the finest restaurants in the San Fernando Valley. It was "the" place for graduation or birthday dinners. I was told years ago that the way the restaurant got its name was from the flocks of Canadian geese that make the San Fernando Valley their winter home.

In a day or two, when the rain clouds disappear (and if the weather was cold enough) residents of the eastern parts of the San Fernando Valley should be able to see the snow capped grandeur of Mount Baldy.

Officially named Mount San Antonio by Spanish missionaries of the Order of Friars Minor (OFM) or Franciscans, the mountain was christened after Saint Anthony of Padua. The patron saint of lost objects, San Antonio was a member of the Franciscan Order.
The saint, as did members of his religious community, tonsured or shaved the top of his head as a sign of his obedience to the rules of Saint Francis Assisi. To avoid being burned in the hot sun of Southern California, Franciscan friars (brothers) wore hooded robes or small beanies called in Italian "zucchetto".
Brother Eugenio Casano, the band teacher at Notre Dame High School in Sherman Oaks had a cherished zucchetto given to him by Eugenio Pacelli, Pope Pius XII.

Calling it Mount Baldy may have been a very early Spanish rancheros' joke about Mount San Antonio. Some say it got its name by the lack of trees above the snow line.
The Tongva people of the San Fernando and San Gabriel Valleys called the mount "Joat" simply meaning snow

PIERCE COLLEGE AND THE VALLEY'S AGRICULTURAL HERITAGE

Look closely at this vintage postcard, and envision what the hills surrounding Pierce College look like today. All are covered with homes, commercial buildings and apartments. In the blinking of an eye, the San Fernando Valley's agricultural spaces have disappeared, and soon the orchards and farm lands that once epitomised life in the Valley will be gone, likely forever.

The Museum Community believes our school children deserve at least a few places in the San Fernando Valley where they can experience first hand their agricultural heritage. Protecting and defending the "farm" at Pierce College isn't just a matter of nostalgia but is a very important tie to where the Valley has been, what it is today, and where it will go in the future.

This postcard was sent in July of 1920 to Mrs. J. E. Rhind at 205 Arden Avenue in Glendale, California. It reads: "6/30/20 6 pm Newhall. Am on the way. Regards to Auntie, Grandmother and yourslef. Tell Ralph to be careful on the 4th. The Little Man."

When the Sylmar Earthquake of 1971 occurred, this reservoir had over 10 million tons of water to be released.

One of our first acts, when The Museum Community, worked to clean and organize the historical museum at Los Angeles Valley College, was to bring Bill Carpenter aboard to manage the site. Bill will soon have his hands full moving the James Dotson collection is moved to the college's new library building.

JOSEPH VAN WOLF AT HIS FATHER'S FAMOUS SCULPTURE IN VAN NUYS

It rained hard on Friday night, and as much as the San Fernando Valley needed the water, Richard Hilton kept his fingers crossed that the weather would clear for The Museum's historic walking tour of Van Nuys. It did!

A modest group of walking tourists joined Hilton, Director of Museum Tours and Adventures, despite dire predictions of downpours. In actuality, one couldn't ask for a better day for the two and a half walk. It was cool and crisp, but not cold.

A special treat awaited our intrepid walkers, when they stopped to learn about the famous Fernando sculpture standing in front of the court buildings. Among the walkers was Joseph Van Wolf, the son of the statue's sculptor Henry Van Wolf. Joe shared stories about how his dad had him flex his arms and hands as models, as well as how the massive sculpture piece was made and transported to the heart of Van Nuys and the center of the San Fernando Valley.

LYNDER ELLSWORTH BEHYMER MEDALLION ADDED TO MUSEUM COLLECTION

The December 2011 gift of sculptures by the San Fernando Valley artist Henry Van Wolf will provide historical evidence and inspiration for generations to come. Among the works donated to The Museum of the San Fernando Valley is this large bronze medallion of Lyner Ellsworth Behymer, whose story appears in part earlier on this blog. Behymer spent much of his adult life bringing important musical events to Los Angeles and laying the foundations for a world-class symphonic orchestra for the city.

In June of 1934, 246 eager youngsters graduated from Eleanor J. Toll Junior High School in Glendale, California. To a processional march from Wagner's Tannhauser, students entered the Athletic Field of Herbert Hoover High School. Most listened politely to an address entitled "Training For The Big Job" by Mr. Reynold E. Blight of Los Angles.

78 years have passed and only a few of those who graduated on that afternoon still remain with us, but their names are permanently part of San Fernando Valley history.

We can learn many things from what museum's called ephemera. Small items, such as ink blotters and match book covers, can give us addresses of business establishments now long gone. But, on occasion, such as this "The Land of Sunshine - The Magazine of California and The West, we can identify important social and economic elements of life.

Millions of children envied Bobby Blake, the boy actor who played "Little Beaver" in Allan Lane's "Red Ryder" films.

The terrific thing about Allan Lane is that he could fight a villain in a film, and never get his Nudie cowboy shirt wrinkled -- let alone dirty or bloody. Santa Fe Uprising starred other Valley-based actors such as Bobby Blake, Martha Wentworth and Barton McLane. Allan Lane died in Woodland Hills.

An element of The Museum's plans to serve the entire San Fernando Valley, means an assertive effort to effectively expose residents of the Valley to its historical and cultural treasures. This means taking The Museum to the people means many ways of sharing the Valley's heritage, near their homes and places of work.

This last weekend, over 200 visitors to the Campo de Cahuenga reenactment event had the opportunity to see the wax maquette (artist's model) that the great sculptor, Henry Van Wolf, made in 1976 as a tribute to America and his adopted home in the San Fernando Valley.

This last week, I spoke to the Van Nuys Rotary Club at the 94th Aero Squdron restaurant next to the Van Nuys Airport. Since there were young people from Birmingham High School at the luncheon, I changed my usual Museum talk to the building of Birmingham Hospital, the strategic important of Van Nuys Airport in World War II, the making of the film Casablanca. Don't worry, I made sure to include vital information about The Museum as well.

Had there been students from Granada Hills, I most likely would have used this great old music sheet cover to talk about the great old time actor James Cagney and his role in 1944 of George M. Cohan. Jimmy Cagney had a ranch in Granada Hills, and inspired America with the great old WWI song

The Museum plans to create a mobile exhibit on the life and times of James Cagney. Don't you agree that kids today should get to hear and see Cagney performing, "I'm a Yankee Doodle Dandy?"

I had the chance to visit a bit with the railroad aficionado David Coscia at this Sunday's Campo de Cahuenga reenactment events. David is the author of a new work entitled "Pacific Electric and the Growth of the San Fernando Valley." The Museum's Public Speakers Series, and Campo de Cahunega's "fireside chats" will be presenting a special lecture and book signing with David in the near future.

Today The Museum Community honors the memory of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr, the leaders of the African-American civil rights movement. Dr. King lived from January 15th 1929 until his assassination on April 4, 1968.

Cherishing Our Valley 2012

On January 5th, some members of The Museum Community were able to witness the winter sunrise at the ancient Native American pictograph cave in the Santa Suzanna Mountains. After that once in a lifetime opportunity, Board Members Scott Sterling, Gary Fredburg and I went to the Country Deli Restaurant on Topanga Canyon in Chatsworth. The food was great, the service super and the prices more than fair. Plied with terrific coffee, we walked through the restaurant to enjoy the home-made murals of Chatsworth celebrities. Unfortunately, I only had a cell phone camera with me, so you can bet that the Country Deli Restaurant will be high on my list to take better pictures of its art ... and the pancakes!

DOROTHY LAMOUR - THE SAN FERNANDO VALLEY'S SUPER STAR

Two of the most important film stars of the 1940s made their homes in the San Fernando Valley. The megastar Dorothy Lamour was viewed as the personification of the exotic woman. Here she is shown with Satan the Tiger - the best known tiger in the world during his lifetime.Dorothy Lamour lived in Toluca Lake and Satan in Bird Wonderland in Encino (then Van Nuys).

Dorothy Lamour lived into her 80s, still much loved by the movie-going public. Her funeral was held at Saint Charles Borromeo Catholic church in North Hollywood. She is buried in Forest Lawn cemetery in the Hollywood Hills.

The 18 artifacts related to Notre Dame in The Museum's collection, when coupled with a manuscript entitled "The Beginnings of the Brothers of Holy Cross in California" by Brother Richard Daly (1967 Santa Clara University) form an important basis for The Museum's on-going history of this Sherman Oaks high school.

The restoration of historic Lankershim Station in North Hollywood is your Museum Community's wish for 2012. Isn't it high time that the money set aside years ago be used to get this treasure of the San Fernando Valley opened again?

Los Angeles City Councilman Tom LaBonge speaks of Lankershim Station as a natural "anchor" for the North Hollywood Historic District. Tom thinks that a retired steam engine would create a real center of interest for the site. The Museum Community agrees.

Situated directly across from the NoHo Red Line and Orange Line stations, Lankershim Station is an ideal landmark for the eastern Valley. And... the property has room for the historic Weddington House as well. Let's get the Station restoration going in 2012!

When Chris sent this vintage postcard to her friend Pat in Victoria, British Columbia in 1973, she complained of experiencing two days of Victoria rain in the San Fernando Valley on her January visit. Someone should have told her that Canadian geese come to the Valley in January too.

MUSEUM PRODUCES NORTH HOLLYWOOD WALKING TOUR BOOKLET

Written by Museum Board Member Richard Hilton, "A Historic Walking Tour of North Hollywood 'Home of the Peach'" has just been produced by The Museum of the San Fernando Valley. What began as a small souvenir for those who participate in the bi-monthly walking tour of the NoHo, has evolved into a handsome 20-page booklet with many delightful photographs and stories of the Valley city once known as "the Home of the Peach."

With photographs generously loaned by Guy Weddington McCreary and images from the Archives of The Museum of the San Fernando Valley and from the collection of the author Richard Hilton, the booklet features images that haven't been seen for nearly a century.

Edited in part by Museum Board Member Phyllis Hansen, the work was also edited and produced by Michel Stevens. Graphic design, creative and layout services were provided by Graphic Elements. The brochure was funded by the Mid-town North Hollywood Neighborhood Council and in part by The Museum of the San Fernando Valley.

For the last two years, The Museum's historic walking tours have been graciously sponsored by the Universal City North Hollywood Chamber of Commerce.

In 2012, The Museum plans on producing two more tour booklets; one for the Van Nuys historic walking tour and a self-guided automobile tour of the Northridge, Porter Ranch and Granada Hills areas of the San Fernando Valley.

Richard Denning was one of the big "hunk" stars of the 1940s. Here he poses with the Paramount starlette Helen Gilbert in the Dorothy Lamour film, "Malaya" Jackie the Lion (famous as the Metro Goldwyn Mayer logo star) lived and was trained for the movies in Bird Wonderland in what is now Encino, California.

This white bird was at one time one of the most successful working actors in Hollywood. Cockie, owned by Bird Wonderland in Encino, lived to be over 75 years old and starred in nearly all of the animal-related films of his era.

Bob Peppermuller is at it again, working to save San Fernando Valley "Redcar" history. Here he shares a sign indicating the location of the McKinley Home for Boys in Van Nuys (later Sherman Oaks. The McKinley Home opened at its location on Riverside Drive in 1923. It served abused and neglected children there until 1960, when it moved to its present location in San Dimas.

“This sign is from the Pacific Electric passenger stop in themiddle of Chandler Blvd. at Woodman Ave. The McKinley Home was south on Woodmanat Riverside Drive.

Typically the sign would be about 15 feet up on a poleholding the trolley wires. After the San Fernando line was abandoned, at 3pm onDecember 29, 1952 when power was cut, all the track material was removed downto about three blocks north of Santa Monica Blvd. on Highland Ave in Hollywood.This sign ended up in the Southern Pacific railroad yard in San Bernardino wherethe back was painted with a "No Parking" sign. It was saved from thebeing scrapped and ended up in a railroad swap meet where I purchased it.”

BOB HOPE'S PROPERTY IN TOLUCA LAKE - 1951

Mr. Glenn E. Mueller of Diamond Bar shares this insight into the famous Bob and Dolores Hope home in Toluca Lake.

“My folks & I lived at 4348 Ledge Ave. in what's now Toluca Lake, during 1941 to 1951, it was North Hollywood . . .

My dad had an aerial photo taken in 1944 which includes Bob Hope's house on the left. The street running up the top of the picture is Woodbridge and Bloomfield runs "into our driveway."

I graduated both North Hollywood Jr. High and the North Hollywood High School S-54 class . . My sister, Marilyn, was a graduate of both but S-56 from North Hollywood High School

The 2nd attachment is when "we" sold the house. Bob Hope bought it to live in while his mansion was renovated. Then he subdivided the three acres we had and sold off the lots. Hope brought his residence property line up to the driveway and behind the four car garage (not 3 as mentioned in the LA Times) which increased his golfing area.

That $70,000 sale price is now going for $2,500,000.00 and that's just for the driveway up behind the house and down the south side of the house to Ledge. The pool was built in 1946 . . . . “

In 1962, San Fernando Valley sculptor Henry Van Wolf completed the long admired bust of President Abraham Lincoln in Meditation. I haven't had the opportunity to read its dedication plaque but have the strong suspicion that it was a donation of the long established Pomeroy family in that community (A Pomeroy married into the Burbank family about the same time the town was founded).

So many important actors have lived and worked in the San Fernando Valley, that publicity photographs of one will often include other famous residents. These photographs given to The Museum by Gary Fredburg in November of 2011, were part of an effort to build our files on the Van Nuys actor Andy Divine, but his celebrity neighbors quickly add to the history of the entertainment industry in the Valley.

Character actor Andy Divine lived with his family in Van Nuys, very near Van Nuys High School.

Andy Divine and Roy Rogers in :The Far Frontier" - Republic Picture. Roy Rogers and Dale Evans lived on a ranch between Chatsworth and Canoga Park. The film was made in the San Fernando Valley in 1948.

Part of the Henry Van Wolf collection, donated by Joseph Van Wolf, the magazine features several Olympians who made their home in the San Fernando Valley at the time.

Eventually there will be a member of The Museum Community or a college student who will write the history of Bird Wonderland in Encino (at the time Van Nuys). It's the kind of thing that I would like to do, had I the time. In the meanwhile, there are always parts of history's puzzle worth exploring, and sometimes though I am limited in time, I have to investigate..

There are many photographs of Jackie the Lion among the images donated recently to The Museum by Joan Putney. At first, I assumed the famous MGM lion in the collection belonged to the owner of Bird Wonderland Coulson Glick, but it now seems more likely that Jackie was the property of a lion tamer and performer named Mel Koontz. The lion may have been boarded at Bird Wonderland or was there just for the time when Mel Kooze worked there.

Jackie was neither the first, nor the last of the MGM lions. He was lion number 2, who ruled the film world from 1929 to the mid 1950s. He died in Thousand Oaks in 1952.

I'm guessing its some car club or something Chicano oriented. It also said 'song of the dreamer' which I found on the internet is a great song by Eddie Fisher that topped the charts in 1955."

I try my best to keep up with old friends, especially those with connections to the San Fernando Valley. This week a pal, Dick Mlack sent me his photograph in a shirt from his Fraternity days at Pierce College. To my everlasting envy, the shirt still fits!

Dick Mlack's story is not an unusual one for those with roots in our Valley. He was born in Ohio, but moved with his family to the Valley when he was six years old. He attended Notre Dame High School in Sherman Oaks and graduated in 1959. In 1962 he was initiated in the Phi Delta Psi Fraternity at Pierce College. He entered the United States Air Force in 1964, serving in Alaska and the U.S. Air Force Academy. Mlack graduated from the University of Texas in Arlington. He retired from IBM in 2003, after 30 years. At present, Dick and his wife Connie reside in Denver, Colorado.

Often historical events and objects cross paths. Sometimes things are of genuine importance, other times just a passing curiosity. Here's a photograph that I took in the historic art studio of Henry Van Wolf, an artist of immense importance in San Fernando Valley history. The room is a small workshop off of Van Wolf's large studio space. The area may be much like it was with the artist died in 1982.

Aside from the wonderful art objects and models left on Van Wolf's work bench (above), there is a nondescript white cabinet along the wall at the right. As a cabinet in Henry Van Wolf's studio, the storage unit is worth saving. But, Joseph Van Wolf, the artist's son, has added an extra fact to the cabinet's legacy.

An old white cabinet in a work room off of Henry Van Wolf's studio. The artist, or a helper, is likely to have painted the storage unit white, sometime in the 1950s. When Joseph had me open it, the interior color revealed its origins. Joseph Van Wolf explained that the unit had been part of the furnishings of the United State Military facility of Birmingham Hospital. Yep, the unit's interior is World War II regulation olive green. Birmingham Hospital and its long ago wounded GIs are all but forgotten today. An encounter with a green storage cabinet jogged this writer's memories.

In 1943, the beloved American singer Dinah Shore moved to Encino with her new husband, the actor George Montgomery. Dinah was much impressed with the beautiful birds of the historic Bird Wonderland Collection not far from her new home. In 1944, one of the first songs presented on The Dinah Shore Show on radio was "The San Fernando Valley."

Dorothy Lamour, who lived in Toluca Lake, was one of America's most famous film stars of the 1940s. The great "Road" films of the era, with stars like Bob Hope and Dorothy Lamour, were wildly popular. Here the beautiful Lamour poses with the wild animal star Satan the Tiger, promoting the film "The Road to Zanzibar" in 1941.

Dorothy Lamour helped fund the construction of Saint Charles Catholic church in North Hollywood. Her funeral was held in the landmark church.

I am not sure but this open air exhibition held between November 1st to 7th, 1948 may have been the first group show put on by the newly formed San Fernando Valley Professional Artists' Guild. The animal sculptures atop the gateway identify the location as being on the property of the president and founder of the Guild, Henry Van Wolf. The woman seated by Mr. Van Wolf is Mrs. Paula L. Sorensen, a member of the Guild and a singer.

When I had the privilege of visiting the studio of the great Henry Van Wolf, this last week, I saw this small sculpture atop a cabinet. It is a rendering of Van Wolf's dream of an heroic Tarzan statue never completed. I took the liberty of taking out the backgrounds, so that a measure of the sculptor's vision might be enjoyed by today's residents of the San Fernando Valley.

Long believed lost, the silent motion picture, The Enemy has been recently found. This photograph features the mega-star Lillian Gish. She co-starred with Norman Kerry in the film, shot on location in Studio City at the Fryman Ranch in 1927.

Actor John Gilbert was right-up-there with Rudolph Valentino as an American heart throb when he made this motion picture called The Cossacks in 1928. His very young co-star Renee Adoree was absolutely adored as the sex kitten of her era. Renee died 1933 while in her early 30s of tuberculosis in a Tujunga hospital.

In the 1950s this gateway to the studio of the San Fernando Valley sculptor, Henry Van Wolf, graced the corner of Chandler Boulevard and Hazeltine Street in Van Nuys. The gate was a major landmark for those looking north on Chandler. Henry Wolf and his wife Veronica moved to Van Nuys from New York in 1944. Four years later, he founded the Valley Artists Guild.

If you have admired the handsome bronze Native American statue in the Van Nuys Administrative Center, you have seen the marvelous work of the late San Fernando Valley sculptor Henry Van Wolf. The landmark statue, generally referred to as "Fernando" represents our Valley's Tongva heritage, was erected in the Civic Plaza in 1968. It's original image was bright gold.

Among the wonderful photographs given to The Museum of the San Fernando Valley by Jean Putney in October of 2011 is this promotional photograph of the Original Beverly Hill Billies. Though the picture is not dated. it is likely to be from the early 1940s. Earlier this year Porky Johnson, one of The Museum's oral history subjects, referred to the Beverly Hill Billies when he talked about the musical group, The Sons of the Pioneers and cowboy film star Roy Rogers, and the song writer Bob Nolan.

I've been told that "gna" is an ancient Tongva word meaning village. The Tongva, sometime referred to as Mission Indians, Fernandiños or Gabrieliños spoke a Uto-Aztecan language. Since the pre-European Tongva were hunter-gatherers, their villages appear to be temporary or seasonal gathering places.

Not much is known about the actress/model Jean Brooks after she made the RKO film "The Leopard Man" in 1943. While critics believed that she had the looks and talent to be a star, her career never took off. "Dynamite" the black leopard's career was more successful. He was one of Birdland's most sought after San Fernando Valley performers.

With Kay Kyser and Mischa Auer, the great radio comic Joan Davis starred in RKO's film "Around the World" in 1943. Comedy was exceedingly important to an America at war, and Joan Davis was much loved.

Kay Kyser, a big band leader of his time, was called "The Old Professor of Swing."

Playing the role of "Looloo", Polly Walker co-starred with San Fernando Valley actor, Jack Oakie in the film "Hit The Deck" in 1930. She was attracted to the film industry, from her successful roles on Broadway, by the Granada Hills film star James Cagney.

While processing photographs donated to The Museum by Joan Putney this October, these great photographs of Ingrid Bergman, Humphrey Bogart and the long-lived cockatoo "Cockie" were discovered. Possibly still shots from the film Casablanca (filmed in Burbank and at Van Nuys Airport), the photographs are undated and may be from a later film in which the two film actors co-starred.

The gorgeous cockatoo lived to be over 75 years old.

The actor John Carroll and his wife Lucile Ryman Carroll once owned a popular youth ranch in Granada Hills. I know little about the place save for the rumor that the actress Marilyn Monroe used to visit the ranch when she stayed with the Carrolls at their Hollywood apartment. Lucile Ryman was well known in the movie industry as a casting agent.

Representatives from The Museum of the San Fernando Valley participated in the 6th Annual Los Angeles Archives Bazaar on October 22nd. Organized by L.A. as Subject, the gathering was held at the University of Southern California's Doheny Library. The highly attended event attracts those involved in scholarly research, ordinary folks interested in history, educators and journalists. The event represents the second year of involvement by The Museum of the San Fernando Valley. Over 80 archives were represented.

As an element in The Museum's professional growth, our Board of Directors and Committee Chairs have begun systematic visits to important, and developing, museums in our part of Southern California. Most recently, Board Member Liane Schirmer arranged for us to visit the remarkable Wende Museum in Culver City. It was one of the most stimulating museum experiences that we've shared.

For many of us, the fact that young Americans in our colleges and universities have no appreciable memory of the existence of the Berlin Wall, a divided Germany, and the real threats to our nation's survival during the Cold War. The presence of the world's largest collection of Soviet Era artifacts outside of Europe resides here in the greater Los Angeles area.

Defacing a bust of Lenin during the Soviet control of East Germany could have easily resulted in prison and/or torture. Here, painted with colors from the West, is a statue defaced shortly after the fall of East Germany in 1989

Protected with earthquake protection netting, the leaders of the communist world peer into history, Most of these kinds of artifacts were quickly destroyed after the fall of the Soviet Union, and East Germany in 1989.

When Catherine Olson took these docile photographs of Hollywood landmarks, the world was a long way from peace.

The west coast headquarters of NBC radio was located on Sunset Boulevard in Hollywood, when this photo was taken on June 4, 1942. The image was developed the same day the United States Navy was engaged with the ships of the Imperial Japanese Navy in the Battle of Midway. Photo 3876

Taken also at the time of the Battle of Midway, this photograph shows the facade of the very famous Earl Carroll Theatre on Sunset Boulevard. A note on the back of the photo indicates that the iconic neon lighted sign was the image of Beryl Wallace. Catherine Olson noted that the address was 6230 Sunset Boulevard. At the time this photograph was taken, and processed at the Campus Camera Shop in Westwood, the Battle of El Alamein was going on in North Africa. I am not sure, but I think automobiles were no longer being manufactured in America by this time.

JERRY COLONNA WAS ONCE ONE OF THE MOST RECOGNIZED COMIC VOICES IN THE USA

Most older San Fernando Valley residents know that Bob and Dolores Hope lived in Toluca Lake and are buried in the San Fernando Mission, but are less aware of Jerry Colonna's life among us. Jerry, his wife and son lived in Encino. His son Bob graduated from Notre Dame High School in Sherman Oaks.

Jerry Colonna and Bob Hope worked hard to keep up the morale of American service personnel during World War II in their highly popular USO shows, and continued to entertain GIs in later years as well. Bob Colona played in many films, and had one of the most recognized radio voices in America. He died after a lengthy illness in the Motion Picture Hospital in Woodland Hills.

On the way home from having lunch at Jerry's Deli in Encino, Tom Mentlick, Brendan's friend, drove through the hills and turned south on Louise Avenue. We turned west above the location where the actor John Wayne once lived.
When I was a Notre Dame High School boy, the Wayne's white colonial house was still there. He and his wife Pilar sold the property and moved (I think) to Newport Beach.

A few weeks ago before The Museum Board's meeting at the Christian Science Church in Van Nuys, Richard Hilton (Director of The Museum's tours - including historic Van Nuys) walk around Saint Elizabeth's Catholic Church on Kittridge Street. Richard remarked about the Latin and Greek inscriptions at the bottoms of the church's bronze lamp posts. I've been to the church dozens of times, and never noticed the lamp post bases before.

This last week Art Jacob's, regular contributor to this blog visited the church and took photographs that I have never seemed to capture. I know we all will enjoy them, along with Art's reasons for his time there.

"Today I had the opportunity to visit St. Elizabeth Church in Van Nuys. The 8th grade class sponsored a rummage sale this weekend to raise funds towards their 8th grade project. Each 8th grader will make a food basket for St Elizabeth's parish families who cannot afford a Thanksgiving meal. After viewing the sale, Mrs Silvie Martin was nice enough to take me on a tour of the school and the Parish. St. Elizabeth has been serving the Van Nuys community since 1928.

When the school opened under the Sister's of Providence from St. Mary of the Woods, Indiana it housed a two story building with four classrooms. Since then the school has expanded and currently serves students from pre-school to the 8th grade. St Elizabeth's is committed to providing all students with a well rounded education that will assist them in their future. The $400,000.00 sancturay was designed by George Adams; Architect and Roy Steed; Builder. The Catholic Parish with its 120 foot tower was completed in 1949 on the corner of Cedros Avenue and Kittridge Street. Father Patrick O'Dwyer officated at the laying of the cornerstone. I've included some photo's of the Parish, including a cool bronze water sculture on the wall of the home for the residing Priest.

In the middle of World War II, when thousands of draftees and volunteers were stationed, or passed through, California, the King Sisters recorded their version of the popular song "The San Fernando Valley." The four women's a capella version of the song was a big hit, and helped to create the romantic image of the Valley as the place in which to settle down when the GIs came home.

A fabulous tribute to visionaries Casey and Melissa Hallenbeck, Phil's Diner is at long last opened to the public. And,,, The Museum Community could not be more excited! We think meeting a friend or taking someone you care about at the Diner will not only be a treat to great food but a wonderful connection to San Fernando Valley history as well. (Who's that at the end of the counter... could it be Marlon Brando rehearsing his role in the Wild Bunch?)

At one time radio was the most popular entertainment medium in America. And the "king" of daytime radio was the variety show host of Breakfast In Hollywood, Encino's Tom Breneman. Tom's show, originally aired on KFWB began broadcasting in January of 1941, cheered up America during the years of WW II and lasted until 1948. The characters on his show were as well known as situation comedy tv stars are today.

Several of you have asked if there is a photograph in the Putney Collection of Birdland itself. Here it is. The date of the photograph is unknown, but it is likely from the late 1940s to early 1950s. This successful business was owned by Coulson and Lucile Glick and lasted until around 1954.

One of the most important film directors of the late 1930s and 1940s was Michael Curtiz. He brought the world some of the most exciting films of his era, including: The Adventures of Robin Hood, Captain Blood and the Sea Hawk. The music from these films are now regularly included in classical performances. Curtiz lived in Woodland Hills. After the director's death, the great actor Gene Hackman bought the two acre property and lived there for some time.

Coulson and Lucile Glick once owned one of the most important animal and bird suppliers for the motion picture industry. Operating from their headquarters at Bird Wonderland (15640 Ventura Boulevard in Van Nuys -later Sherman Oaks) the Glicks took Coulson’s hobby of raising birds and training animals into a profitable enterprise with some of the most famous animal “actors” in movie history.

"BROOKLYN BOMBSHELL - Somehow, it seems, there's always a red-head from Brooklyn, somewhere in Hollywood. First it was Clara Bow, then Barbara Stanwyck came along. And, if Barbara ever chooses to step down and assume the home life of Mrs. Robert Taylor, there is Susan Hayward waiting to take up the laurels. Barbara, at present, is working opposite Fred MacMurray in Paramount's "Remember the Night." And she's celebrating her tenth anniversary as a screen celebrity. She's the despair of costume designers, and the delight of directors. For Barbara cares not a whit about her gowns and costumes; all she asks is a good part in a good picture, and it is to this uncanny knack of selecting top roles that she attributes her success.

Pictures like "So Big," "The Plough and the Stars,", "Stella Dallas," The Mad Miss Manton," "Union Pacific," and "Golden Boy." have stamped her as a versatile actress and an accomplished performer. But, it was not ever thus. Youngest of five children, she was placed in an orphanage when her mother died. Barbara went to public schools in Brooklyn and divided her yearnings between a dancing career and that of a missionary to China.

Eventually she took dancing lessons - after working in a department store - and worked up through night clubs to Shubert productions. Then Willard Mack put her in a small part in "The Noose," and Ruby Stevens became Barbara Stanwyck. It was a combination of Barbara Fritchio and Jane Stanwyck.

She was a year - a hit in "Burlesque" (the play) and came to Hollywood in 1929. Less than a year ago, Barbara became the envy of a million women by marrying Robert Taylor. While she was working in "Remember The Night", he was working in "Remember" and just so they wouldn't forget, they bought a new home in Beverly Hills. But, she still has her horse ranch in the San Fernando Valley."

When, lifelong San Fernando Valley resident Catherine Olson died earlier this year, her daughter Mary made sure that The Museum received some of her interesting photographs and 1984 Olympic Games memorabilia. Here are three snapshots from one of Catherine's albums. They give us a glimpse of what recreation was like in the 1930s.

Canadian born, John "Jack" Carson was a highly popular main/character actor during the "golden age" of motion pictures in the 1940s and '50s. He lived in the San Fernando Valley and died in Encino in 1963.
