DAN GOOSSEN DIES AT 64; SAN FERNANDO VALLEY BOXING PROMOTER


Boxing promoter Dan Goossen, who transformed his family's vacant San Fernando Valley field into a business that produced world champions, died Monday of complications from liver cancer, his family announced. He was 64.

"The sudden news of his diagnosis was very much a private matter, and his final days were spent surrounded by his family and closest friends," the Goossen family said in a statement. No other details were disclosed.



Goossen's large San Fernando Valley-based family of eight brothers and two sisters, reflected in the naming of his original company, Ten Goose Boxing. All of the siblings were involved in the business.

The Museum of the San Fernando Valley is pleased to announce its grand opening event at its new location in Northridge on November 8, 2014 from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. The offices and exhibit space is located on the southeast corner of Nordhoff St. and Wilbur Ave.

Dignitaries, local business leaders, Museum members, media and the general public will all enjoy a special afternoon and evening with inaugural exhibits and collections ranging from:

Military Exhibit
 
Artifacts from WWII, Korea and Vietnam will be on display. Members from Wings Over Wendy's Veterans group will be on hand to offer first-person accounts of their experiences, bravery, dedication and heroism.

Westmore Family Collection
   
The Westmore Family is the first family of Hollywood make-up. George Westmore, family patriarch, serve Hollywood as make-up artists in various capacities since he established Hollywood's first make-up department in 1917. The Westmore's have carried the tradition for four generations. Incredible artifacts, posters and other industry items will be on display.

The Westmore brothers became make-up artists for the likes ofRudolph Valentino, faces of Charles Laughton's grotesqueHunchback of Notre Dame (for RKO), Bette Davis' eyebrowless, almost bald, white-faced look in The Private Lives of Elizabeth and Essex Monte and for epic movies such as Gone with the Wind(1939).

Leigh Wiener Collection 
 
Amazing photographs of celebrities, athletes and musicians and photographic equipment from award-winning American photographer and photojournalist Leigh Wiener will be on display. 

Additional exhibits and displays will cover the history, art and culture of aerospace, art, architecture, aviation, transportation, music and water.

The Museum is celebrating its new home with an inaugural art exhibit that will feature 3 art shows, live music, refreshments, raffles and a silent auction. The main show will feature original artwork by 11 regional artists, each presenting his or her own interpretation of the history of Northridge. 




Over 30 artists are also transforming everyday chairs into art that will be part of a silent auction to benefit the Museum.

A third show will be a collection of frames whimsically decorated by the PAI artists. 
Special thanks to the Great Frame Up for donating the frames!

Join the Public Art Initiative and Northridge "Sparkle" Campaign, as we celebrate the completion of our first historical mural along Reseda Blvd. in Northridge. 

Come meet the artist, Tim Cornelius, and see the finish mural on the side of Orphaned CDs. Special Guest speaker Councilmember Mitch Englander will present the mural and Marv Rosenberg's Safaris of the 1960 Gold Record, "Image of a Girl," will be singing a cappella! Vintage sounds of Doo-Wop to celebrate our vintage San Fernando Valley!

In collaboration with the Northridge "Sparkle" Campaign and Big Draw LA, there will also be two art activities that anyone can participate in while you wait for the unveiling to happen. First, help local artist paint trash bins and second, sketch your ideal neighborhood on a large community drawing board.
